Mission (Job Summary):
The Behavioral Health Technician/Certified Nursing Assistant (BHT/CNA) provides direct client care to adults (typically age 18 and up) who are hospitalized for substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health issues, and related behavioral health challenges. This dual-role position supports the therapeutic environment, assists with activities of daily living (ADLs), and contributes to the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of clients in collaboration with the nursing and clinical teams. The BHT/CNA may also be responsible for the safe and timely distribution of prescribed medications under the supervision of licensed nursing staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Client Care & Support
- Assist clients with ADLs.
- Ensure clients comfort, dignity, and safety during all care activities.
- Take and record vital signs, weights, and other routine measurements.
- Recognize and report abnormal changes in client’s condition to nursing staff promptly.
- Participate in clients rounds and accurately observe and document client behavior and status.
Medication Assistance
- Pass medications in accordance with organizational policy and under supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Ensure accurate documentation of medication administration and adherence to safety protocols.
- Observe clients for medication side effects or adverse reactions and report to appropriate staff.
Behavioral Health & Therapeutic Support
- Support the therapeutic milieu by reinforcing treatment goals and program rules.
- Use verbal de-escalation techniques and maintain a calm, professional demeanor in crisis situations.
- Monitor clients’ participation in groups and structured activities.
- Encourage client engagement and model appropriate interpersonal interactions.
- Provide support during psychiatric or behavioral emergencies as part of the response team.
Documentation & Communication
- Document all care provided, observations, and interactions with clients in a timely and accurate manner.
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members to support coordinated care.
- Maintain client confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations at all times.
Safety & Environment
- Ensure client belongings are inventoried and stored safely upon admission.
- Monitor visitation and ensure safety procedures are followed.
- Support infection control efforts and cleanliness of the unit.
- Participate in safety drills and respond appropriately to emergency codes.
Administrative & Team Support
- Ensure client care areas are stocked with needed supplies.
- Assist in the orientation of new staff as requested.
- Attend and actively participate in all required trainings, meetings, and in-services.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in behavioral health, human services, or a related healthcare setting preferred.
- Training or coursework in psychology, mental health, or substance use disorders is preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to remain calm, compassionate, and professional under stress.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 lbs occasionally.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching required.
- Must be able to respond physically and emotionally in emergency situations.
- Adequate visual and auditory acuity for observation and communication.
