Position Overview
Cleveland Thermal is seeking a dedicated and skilled Instrumentation and Control Technician to ensure the smooth operation of our production processes, which include steam distribution, electrical generation, and chilled water distribution. This role is crucial in providing our clients with a reliable and clean source of energy year-round. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting control systems, metering devices, and pressure monitoring equipment.

What you will do
- Adhere to all company safety and health policies and procedures. Write Safe Job Procedures as needed.
- Conduct daily assessments, correct or communicate problems, and report hazards immediately.
- Inspect company vehicles before use to ensure safe operation and avoid delays.
- Keep plant, shops, offices, control room, and vehicles clean and safe.
- Carry a mobile device for emergency call-outs and handle emergencies calmly and professionally.
- Perform repair and maintenance on control equipment using test instruments to diagnose and troubleshoot issues, adjust, and calibrate components.
- Conduct general electrical repairs, including replacing fuses, repairing light fixtures, and troubleshooting motor controls.
- Work from complex schematics, drawings, and specifications to perform repairs.
- Troubleshoot all electrical controls and systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance, including filter changes, motor greasing, cleaning, and zero checks.
- Regularly update plant technical drawings with infrastructure.
Qualifications
What you Bring
- Experience using various test and measurement instruments (voltage, amperage, resistance, frequency, pressure, temperature, sonic, etc.).
- Understanding of industrial controls, electricity, and three-phase power.
- Knowledge of medium and low voltage switchgear (4160v and 480v).
- Strong troubleshooting skills, using resources like manuals, textbooks, and consulting experts.
- Basic networking knowledge (computer, industrial equipment).
- Understanding of steam production, water chemistry, and combustion theory.
- Knowledge of heat transfer, including conduction, convection, and radiation.
- Understanding of the refrigeration cycle, evaporative cooling, and absorption chillers.
- Knowledge of pressure-temperature-volume relationships and latent heat of vaporization.
- Proficiency in pneumatic and electronic control systems, both digital and analog.
- Working knowledge of various flow metering technologies.
- Familiarity with steam and chilled water utilization equipment typically found in commercial buildings.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and make decisions quickly in emergencies.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, control panels, and switches.
- Skilled in analyzing and troubleshooting AC/DC circuits.
- Proficiency in reading schematic diagrams and locating components on equipment.
- Ability to use a multi-meter to check volts and test devices.
- Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret utility drawings.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods, grasp, reach, twist, climb, bend, and kneel. Capable of lifting to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Must be able to drive a company vehicle within the Cleveland Thermal system.
Education and Experience
- Vocational or high school graduate
- Accredited apprenticeship or equivalent trades training is a plus.
- Journeyman, associate degree, or trade school is a plus.
- Strong math, written communication, reading, and comprehension skills.
- Computer proficiency, including email, word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
Please note:
This will include exposure to large machinery, tight spaces and hazardous conditions associated with these environments. Exposed to steam, electricity/high voltage, hazardous chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat, wet, humid, and noisy environment. Must wear hard hat, safety toe shoes/boots, hearing protection, safety glasses, and leather gloves and any other appropriate safety equipment when required; must be OSHA compliant.
