Schenectady County Recycles is a partnership between Schenectady County and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County (CCE Schenectady) to deliver recycling and composting education and outreach to the residents of Schenectady County. The program’s mission is to empower our neighbors with the knowledge to manage materials in the most environmentally sustainable way while fostering community and increasing resiliency to environmental, economic, and public health risks.

The Program Assistant position is a flexible, helpful support staff who performs a variety of communications (social media content, website updates, brochures, fliers, etc.) and administrative (event coordination, registrations, etc.) responsibilities for the program.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree. GED/High School Diploma plus 2 years’ experience may substitute for an Associate’s degree.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Ability to help ensure diverse, equitable, and inclusive programs.
  • Travel Requirements - Ability to meet occasional travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to assist with various duties to support programs using strong organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to others.
  • Ability to effectively use social media platforms, websites, software including Canva and Microsoft Office Suite and virtual technology (Zoom, cameras, etc.).
  • Work Environment – In addition to the Working Conditions, the work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. In addition, the position occasionally lifts, moves, or transports program materials and equipment. The position occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, precipitation, and in environments like county fairs, outdoor community events, farms, gardens, and natural environmental settings.

  • Knowledge of marketing for an organization and social media business communication such as Facebook and Instagram.
  • Interest, knowledge, or background in sustainability.
Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Administrative Responsibilities:
Direction and Management – 10%
  • Help plan and manage assigned communication strategies, programs, and events.
Coordination and Operation – 85%
  • Create and maintain social media content.
  • Create brochures and fliers.
  • Process and maintain class and event registrations.
  • Gather program participant information, maintain records.
  • Write communications to program participants.
  • Maintain and update website.
  • Provide regular participant updates to the supervisor.
  • Coordinate assigned programs and events.
  • Coordinate requests for tabling/exhibit events; work with staff on scheduling, displays, and educational resources distribution.
  • Assist program staff as needed or assigned.
  • Perform data entry and complete paperwork for assigned programs.
  • Order and purchase supplies, materials, meals, and food for programs.
  • Maintain inventory of programs materials and supplies. Communicate with supervisors if materials are needed.
  • Assist with program outreach efforts.
  • Collect evaluations and other data from program participants.
Professional Improvement – 5%
  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details
This is a part-time, nonexempt position, 17.5 hours/week. Compensation paid at the rate of $23 per hour. Excellent benefits, based on eligibility, including:
