Who we are looking for:
We are seeking a hands-on leader in our Chief Compliance Officer with a focus on partnership and collaboration to get to solutions! Cornerstone Capital Bank (“Cornerstone”) is the result of a merger between Cornerstone Home Lending and Roscoe State Bank. Cornerstone opened in October 2022 with capital exceeding $350 million and assets of $1.5 billion, making the bank one of the highest capitalized, newest, and most exciting banks in U.S. history. The CCO is responsible for strategic development and execution of the Bank’s compliance risk management program, as well as leading a cross-functional effort for the successful implementation of three lines of defense risk management model across. You’ll be working for an innovative community bank with Mortgage Banking (with a near-national footprint), Mortgage Servicing, Commercial Banking, and Digital Banking segments. The CCO reports functionally to the Board’s Audit and Risk Committee and administratively to the Chief Risk Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Report quarterly to the Board of Directors’ Audit and Risk Committee, as well as Co-Chair the Enterprise Compliance and Operational Risk Committee.
- Coordinate and manage consumer compliance regulatory examinations and agency/investor reviews.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations, investor guidelines, and industry best practices to ensure adherence to the Board’s risk appetite and identify emerging risks.
- Ensure the Bank has an operating framework for the identification, assessment, management, monitoring, and reporting of compliance risks and issues impacting the bank’s business lines that meet internal and regulatory requirements.
- Lead a team responsible for developing and ensuring the implementation of policies and programs to manage risk associated with various Compliance Activities, including risk assessments, complaint management, customer-facing material reviews, training, compliance monitoring, and testing, Fair and Responsible Banking, Community Reinvestment Act, Privacy and Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develop policies, programs, and a culture that encourage the lines of business to report suspected issues, fraud, and other discrepancies without fear of retaliation.
- Investigate and respond to inquiries from investors and state and federal regulators and agencies.
- Develop annual department budget and work within the department budget, including monitoring and controlling expenses.
- Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities of all compliance programs and activities as they relate to the Bank’s priorities.
- Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the Compliance Department’s methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships. Identify and implement opportunities for improvement.
- Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for team members. Assign work activities, projects, and programs, monitor workflow, and review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
- Responsible for the selection and integration of compliance technology management solutions.
- Works closely with the Chief Risk Officer and other leaders to ensure a well-coordinated effort for managing regulatory examinations.
- Collaborate with executive management and senior business leaders, to provide leadership, expert guidance, partnership, and support in the implementation process for key compliance strategies, initiatives, and action plans across the enterprise.

- Ensure all required reporting is produced promptly, such as HMDA, MCR’s, state regulator reporting, etc.
- Travel: Up to 25%
What you'll need to be successful:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Demonstrated understanding of compliance systems and controls utilized to implement a strong compliance framework designed around the three lines of defense model.
- Minimum 10 years in a senior leadership position and a demonstrable track record of leading and building successful compliance management systems.
- Extensive Risk and Compliance management experience within the financial services industry, with broad familiarity with most laws, rules, and regulations related to banking, and specific experience related to mortgage originations; mortgage performing and non-performing servicing; commercial banking activities; digital banking; fair lending; Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices (UDAAP); Community Reinvestment Act; Privacy; AML/BSA; and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act.
- Expert knowledge of risk management practices and regulatory expectations.
- Strong analytical skills, with an ability to simplify data into concise, actionable reporting.
- Strong attention to detail with a hands-on approach.
- Strong research and computer skills.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to apply compliance regulatory requirements to complex fact patterns and problem-solve viable solutions.
- Ability to work independently with a multi-level team.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- CRCM, CERP or regulatory examiner credential preferred.
- Past experience with the FDIC a plus.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
