The Learning Specialist - Math position is responsible for providing tutoring assistance to students at the main Spencer Hill campus, Elmira Academic and Workforce Development Center, online, or other CCC locations as necessary. Support the overall operations of the Learning Commons. Occasional meetings at different CCC locations may be required. Prolonged time sitting / standing working with computers and monitors, ability to walk / move across campus including walking up and down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds (occasionally may be more), repeated motions may include keyboard typing. Typical student-facing office and indoor building environments, occasional outdoor activity may be required.

Essential Functions

Tutoring and Academic Support - 65%

Provide tutoring services as a learning specialist for math skills on a drop-in and / or appointment basis at the main Spencer Hill campus, Elmira Academic and Workforce Development Center, online, and other locations, as necessary
Tutor students in courses ranging from pre-algebra through the calculus sequence, as well as occasionally assisting students with the math components of other courses
Work with faculty to ensure tutoring content and skills support is appropriately aligned with course curriculum, scope, and sequence, and to provide students with needed tutorial services
Develop and conduct workshops and live presentations for students (e.g. subject-specific skills, study techniques, time management, etc.) within or outside of classes
Help with the development of supplemental academic resources that students and faculty can access and use independently, such as handouts (print and digital) and video tutorials on relevant academic topics
Provide accurate and suitable documentation of each tutoring session for the benefit of the tutees, the Learning Commons staff, and others as appropriate
Maintain familiarity and application of the best pedagogical practices for learning center services

Operations - 20%

Forge and maintain connections and partnerships with instructional and support staff across the College in all disciplines and service areas in order to market and advocate for the Learning Commons' services

Assist in student outreach, documentation, and tracking in response to faculty referrals of students to the Learning Commons

Work with Library building staff to provide collaborative and cohesive academic support services, materials, and equipment

Help promote the Learning Commons, Library, and their various services to current and prospective students through class visits, tours, informational tables, etc.

Help recruit and interview potential peer tutors and make hiring recommendations to the Assistant Director

Help with the training, observation, and support of peer tutors

Refer students to other services and resources on campus

Provide adequate staffing and services at multiple locations and online

May supervise the Learning Commons or Library Building in the absence of the Director or Assistant Director

May assist with the operation of the Elmira Learning Commons at the Elmira Academic and Workforce Development Center

Help maintain the Learning Commons' web page with current and relevant content

Perform other related duties, as assigned

Training and Supervision - 5%

Assist with planning and conducting training and supervision of peer tutors and other student employees in the Learning Center

Assist with the informal and formal observations of peer tutoring sessions, following through with supportive dialogue with the peer tutor after the session

Remediation and Proctoring of Accommodated Testing - 10%

Work with the Coordinator of Accessibility Services to provide proctoring coverage of accommodated testing for up to 4 hours per week, as needed by the Accessibility Services office

Assist faculty departments with creating videos of exams read aloud for students who have tests read, or otherwise help remediate the audio accessibility of tests (e.g. via Kurzweil) as needed

Email / correspond with professors to obtain tests in advance of the student test time; contact professors if there is a problem during testing (e.g. a missing portion of the test)

Work with students and faculty to schedule accommodated tests for students

Assist with student walk-ins, answer questions, and refer them to the Coordinator of Accessibility Services as needed

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral / written communication skills

Math Learning Specialists : proficiency in the operation of graphing calculators; experience with mathematical technology

Ability to accept changes to job requirements, policies, workload, etc., as well as learn new methods, procedures, or techniques resulting from change with the ability to clearly approach problems and find solutions

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in a discipline related to the subject for which tutoring services will be provided

Work experience in teaching or tutoring at the middle school, high school, or college level

Preferred Qualification :

Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field

Proficiency with higher level / more diverse content within the discipline
