Education/Certification

  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree preferred
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification by the State Board for English Language Arts & Reading Grades 4-8 or 7-12
  • Additional ESL and/or SPED certification, preferred
  • Three years experience with a proven track record of measurable student achievement in reading.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of multisensory literacy instruction and best practices in delivering reading interventions
  • Ability to effectively instruct students and manage student behavior
  • Strong understanding of vertical alignment for Reading TEKS 3rd grade through 12th grade
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Google, Microsoft program, SMART, and other technology applications

Function

Under the guidance of the Curriculum and Instruction department, the secondary Reading Acceleration teacher is responsible for providing instruction to students, individually and in small groups, to enable students to develop grade-appropriate literacy skills. The Secondary Reading Acceleration teacher will teach a course designed to prepare students for their core reading class by previewing components of on-grade-level concepts and reinforcing necessary targeted skills. The Secondary Reading Acceleration teacher will also serve as a literacy leader at their assigned campus with the responsibility of implementing a comprehensive literacy program as outlined by the Curriculum and Instruction department through coaching, supporting, and guiding other teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

Reponsibilities

Instructional:

  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to determine literacy proficiency, appropriate placement, specific instructional needs, and dyslexia supports.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members and support the missions of the school district.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional

  • Participate in professional development as directed by the Curriculum and Instruction department and based on personal reflections to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required by Curriculum and Instruction department and campus leadership.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computers and peripherals; standard instruction equipment.
  • Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; regular overhead reaching.
  • Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds).
  • Environment: Work inside; work alone; potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust.
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress.
