Database Administrators are responsible for establishing database management systems, standards, guidelines and quality assurance for database deliverables, such as: conceptual design, performance tuning, logical database, capacity planning, external data interface specifications, data loading plan, data maintenance plan, and security policy.

The IBM i DB2 Database Administrator is actively involved in the evaluation, review, and management of database resources and services across the organization in order to ensure a high level of database integrity is reached and maintained. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record supporting large scale database infrastructure close association with peer teams and vendors. While providing the database expertise needed for the team’s success, this individual will also be required to develop, follow and enforce database standards.

This position requires an individual who works with minimal supervision on a wide range of projects interfacing with peer support teams, development teams and IT management. The Database Administrator is constantly ensuring that their work is aligned with the business and technology customers.

ROLE

  • Deploys and maintains Database infrastructure/objects.
  • Maintains database security, integrity, and availability.
  • Manages database performance and capacity.
  • Implements database design enhancements.
  • Collaborates with the Development team and the server administrators for dropping/adding partitions, index maintenance including Reorgs, data purging etc.
  • Reviews and approves Forms, table and index creation using the Turnover process.
  • Maintains detailed documentation of database Design/Architecture and setup.
  • Establishes procedures for backup/recovery and disaster recovery.
  • Establishes database security procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry trends and standards.
  • Provides support to the user community using incident and problem management tools.
  • Database Management: Install, configure, and maintain IBM i-based databases (DB2 for i, etc.) and ensure they are optimized for performance.
  • Backup and Recovery: Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery strategies for IBM i-based databases.
  • Performance Tuning: Continuously monitor and optimize the performance of IBM i database systems, including query optimization, indexing, and system resources management.
  • Security and Compliance: Implement security measures to protect sensitive data, including user access control, auditing, and encryption. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • System Upgrades: Plan and execute database upgrades and patches on IBM i platforms with minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve database-related issues, including system performance, connectivity, and integrity issues.
  • Database Maintenance: Perform regular database maintenance tasks, including reorganization, index rebuilds, and data archiving.
  • Collaboration: Work with developers to design and optimize database schemas, stored procedures, and queries. Assist in database-related development and deployment tasks.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation related to database configurations, procedures, and policies.
  • Perform regularly scheduled capacity planning activities providing required storage recommendations.
  • Coordinates interaction with appropriate IT support areas in critical database problem situations.

Required

  • Minimum of 10 years of IT experience to include at at least 5 years as a Database Administrator, specifically with IBM i DB2 (iSeries, AS/400)
  • In-depth knowledge of IBM i operating system (OS/400), database management, and tools like IBM Navigator, STRSQL, etc.
  • Expertise in database performance tuning, backup, recovery, and security.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and relational database management principles.
  • Experience with IBM i system hardware, memory, and storage configurations.
  • Familiarity with IBM i job management, work management, and system resources.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and regulatory compliance standards related to database management.
  • Understanding of industry best practices pertaining to DB2.
  • Experience in Performance Tuning and Capacity Planning.
  • Experience deploying large-scale enterprise applications.
  • Scheduling flexibility to meet the needs of the business, including weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on call responsibilities on a rotational basis.
  • CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) - Associate

Recommended

  • IBM i Certifications (e.g., IBM Certified Database Administrator – DB2 for i).
  • Experience with other database technologies (e.g., MySQL, Oracle) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with IBM Power Systems hardware.
  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing, Nodejs, any other IBM MDM tools (Informatica).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience implementing and managing OLTP and ODS systems.
  • Thorough understanding of database connectivity at logical and physical levels.
  • Ability to translate highly technical problems and solutions to audiences at varying technical levels.
  • Ability to follow priorities, meet deadlines, and adhere to change management policies.
  • Able to support off-hours work as required, including weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on call responsibilities on a rotational basis.
  • Experience in iBMi client access software, journaling, mirroring (MIMIX) software.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.

Pay Ranges

Level 3 - $120,000 - $155,000

Level 4 - $145,000 - $180,000
