The Cosumnes Community Services District is seeking part-time seasonal Assistant Park Rangers to join our team. The season is anticipated to begin April 21, 2025  through October 15, 2025.


Position Description  
The Park Ranger classification assists with informing patrons about park activities, rules, and regulations and promotes the safety of park patrons, employees, facilities, and grounds of assigned parks. Assistant Park Rangers do not have Peace Officer responsibilities.


These positions require candidates to be available to work a variable schedule of 16-32 hours per week including early mornings, nights, and weekends, and holidays. Candidates may be scheduled to start as early as 5:00 am or end as late as 12:00 am.  Actual hours assigned may vary depending upon the needs of the division.


Salary Information
The salary range for the Assistant Park Ranger classification is between $ 21.75 - $ 23.25 per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range.

  • Patrols assigned parks and secures facilities; 
  • Provides a positive presence; promotes enjoyment of the park and voluntary compliance with park rules; provides educational material to park patrons about park regulations, scheduled activities and rules, park hours and other general information;
  • Assists in promoting compliance of park rules and regulations; 
  • Reports security issues to law enforcement authorities as necessary to maintain security and safety,
  • Maintains records and logs;
  • Operates assistive technology such as two-way radios, database software and other computer-based systems;
  • Operates standard office equipment (e.g. Cell phones, computers, copiers, etc…),
  • Assists in responding to emergency incidents and providing emergency care;
  • Monitors park picnic locations;
  • Assists with special events, and public outreach; 
  • Assists in training and directing volunteers;
  • Operates District vehicles related to the patrol of assigned areas and systems;
  • Reports security related issues;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Reports any potentially unsafe conditions to supervisor;
  • Monitors behaviors of park users and participants;
  • Required to work shifts, weekends, nights and holidays;
  • May perform duties in the absence of higher level staff as necessary.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. The education or experience requirement may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the General Manager. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

 Education and Training:

  •  High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent Certification. 


Experience:

  • One (1) year experience in park operations, park regulations, recreation, security, or loss prevention. 

-OR- 

  • Two (2) years experience in a position of customer service including considerable communication skills, problem-solving, and conflict resolution; and
  • Six (6) semester units of study in criminal justice or a closely related academic field.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of or the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR/AED certifications within the first sixty (60) days of employment; Certification must be maintained throughout employment;
  • Must possess a valid California class “C” driver’s license, with a clean driving record and maintain it throughout employment;
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

 

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service techniques for dealing with customers often in a difficult or confrontational situation;
  • Departmental procedures and processes;
  • Modern methods of patrolling and preserving order;
  • Proficiency operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications and programs;
  • Basic operations of automated office machines including calculator, computer, keyboard, printer and other peripherals, copiers, and fax machines.

 

Ability to:

  • Effectively and tactfully communicate with people of all socio-economic levels under stressful or non-stressful circumstances;
  • Resolve conflicts and mediate disputes;
  • Assess violations and develop appropriate responses;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with local law enforcement/non-law enforcement.
  • Comprehend and prepare clear reports and accurate logs, notes and records; 
  • Analyze and use independent judgement in problem solving fairly non-routine situation;
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the rules, regulations, and ordinances of the Cosumnes Community Services District;
  • Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees and the public;
  • Ability to complete specialized training associated with the position;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diversity of others;
  • Read, write, and comprehend reports.
  • Mobility:  occasional sitting and use of keyboard; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling and twisting while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds while loading trucks with supplies and equipment, and assisting with special events; occasional walking on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces;
  • Vision:  constant use of overall vision; occasional computer use; occasional color and depth vision; able to sustain long periods of observation;
  • Dexterity:  occasional repetitive motion; frequent writing and occasional typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching for communication devices; frequent operation of vehicles;
  • Hearing/Talking:  frequent hearing and talking in person, on the phone, and on a radio;
  • Emotional/Psychological:  frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; frequently works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving a variety of vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, car, pick-up, and utility vehicles.  


TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment on a year-round basis in various types of weather and temperature including seasonal conditions such as extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and moisture. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, heat, cold, and other environmental substances. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from offsite indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.


THE PROCESS:

Application Review (Pass/Fail): All applicants must complete and submit an application by the final filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position.
 
  • Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. The supplemental questions will be used to evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of the applicant's education, training, and experience. 
  • Supplemental Screening:  The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all candidates meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.
Oral Interview: All candidates who pass the application review will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview. 
 
Conditional Offer: Candidates selected from the process receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:

Background Check:  A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check
Driving Record:  A State of California, DMV driving record printout will be required. Upon successful completion of the background check.

Upon successful completion of the background check, candidates must complete the following before final appointment:

Medical: A clear drug screening will be required.
Work EligibilityThe District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US.

Failure to meet these pre-employment requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the conditional offer of employment.
