The Cosumnes Community Services District Parks and Recreation Department is seeking dynamic and qualified individuals for the position of CORE Recreation Instructor.
Position Description
Under general supervision, the CORE Recreation Instructor teaches Recreation and Leisure Enrichment classes to a variety of skill and age levels. The Recreation Instructor may teach specialized classes for one or more recreation program areas, including the development and implementation of the program curriculum and budget, procurement of program supplies, and assisting with the training of support staff. This position directs activities and supervises participants at the site. Instructors will lead a variety of enrichment programs focused on dance, fitness, wellness, and more. Specialized class instruction opportunities include, but are not limited to: Les Mills Body Balance, Les Mills Body Pump, Mat Pilates, Yoga, Zumba, Bollywood Dance, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Certified Personal Training, Group Fitness, and more.
About CORE Recreation Center
CORE is opening in spring 2025 and aims to be a high-quality fitness and sports center that has everything community members need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. CORE is 59,000 square feet, offering cardio and strength equipment, boutique group fitness, an indoor walking track, two gyms, habit and nutrition coaching, and more. Plus, activities that will keep kids entertained while adults exercise.
Salary Information:
The CORE Recreation Instructor's salary range is between $26.25 - $28.00 per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range.
The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Provides group or private instruction to recreation participants of all ages and skill levels; evaluates participants and teaches according to defined program outlines, descriptions, and goals; maintains course record sheets;
- Makes minor program modifications to match age and abilities of participants as needed;
- Provides and develops new curriculum for District programs, including but not limited to, sourcing vendors for program materials;
- Assists with the update of existing curriculum for District programs;
- Assists in the development of marketing tools, including but not limited to, requesting and reviewing flier and class descriptions;
- May participate in the development of program budget;
- Designs and implements training specific to their area of instruction;
- Maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress;
- Evaluates and communicates participants concerns to the designated supervisor; reports any potentially unsafe conditions to designated supervisor;
- Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by CSD policies;
- Administers first aid as necessary; Performs emergency procedures when needed;
- Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from CSD and Department policies and procedures manuals;
- Provides courteous and professional service to program participants, facility users, CSD personnel, and the public;
- Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by CSD guidelines;
- Accountable for all program participants during program hours; monitors behavior of participants;
- Conducts set up and clean up of facility and equipment; may be charged with the opening and closing duties;
- Attends and participates at staff meetings and trainings; depending on the assignment, may include monthly in-service trainings, planned and random skills tests, and in-pool assessments;
- Designs and implements program specific training, provides hands-on instruction to onsite staff as required;
- Completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary;
- Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with Department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program;
- Provides positive and continual feedback to participants regarding progress;
- Required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays;
- May communicate with parents, participants, and the public; refers program and participation concerns to the designated supervisor.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Certain assignments may require certifications. When specified, the certifications must be obtained by time of appointment and must be retained throughout employment as a condition of employment.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of teaching and/or coaching in the area of instruction; or applicable degree or certification/designation in the area of instruction.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment; Certification must be maintained through employment;
- Specialized certification(s) for instructor-led courses, including but not limited to: Les Mills, Pilates, Certified Personal Training, and Yoga.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license, with a clean driving record and maintain it throughout employment;
Knowledge of:
- Current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs or facilities;
- Proficiency in computer database programs, desktop publishing, and word processing currently used programs such as Word, Excel, Active Net, VISIO, and PowerPoint;
- Basic operation of automated office machines including calculator, computer, keyboard, printers, and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine;
- Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages, and fractions;
- Coaching and instruction methods for all ages and abilities.
Ability to:
- Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, facility users, independent contractors, vendors, CSD personnel and the public;
- Comprehend and prepare reports and forms such as accident, incident, and behavior reports; emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;
- Lead a classroom of students providing clear instruction and guidance on a day to day basis;
- Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations such as responding to customer or employee problems/complaints, supervising children's activities and trips, caring for children with injuries and resolving conflicts between participants to ensure safety.
- Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting at desk or in meetings for long periods of time; occasionally reaching and twisting to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting while performing classroom work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to forty (40) pounds for setting up programs and/or special events;
- Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
- Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and hand tools such as, but not limited to, cleaning and first aid supplies such as scissors, plunger and mop;
- Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
- Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasionally works alone;
- Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving.
Work will be performed indoors or outside depending on the classes being taught. Those being taught outdoors will be in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.THE PROCESS:
Application Review (Pass/Fail): All applicants must complete and submit an application by the final filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position.
- Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. The supplemental questions will be used to evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of the applicant's education, training, and experience. Depending on the size of the applicant pool, the supplemental questions may be used as a part of the supplemental screening.
- Supplemental Screening: The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all candidates meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.
- Phone Interview: The most qualified candidates from the minimum qualification review will be invited to participate in a phone Interview scheduled for February 26, 2025.
- First Interview: The most qualified candidates from the first interview will be invited to participate in an in-person Oral Panel interview, tentatively scheduled for March 10, 2025.
- Driving Record: A State of California, DMV driving record printout will be required.
- Work Eligibility: The District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US.
