The Direct Support professional is responsible for providing personal care, guidance, and support to male and female clients specific to clients' needs. The Direct Support professional will perform all their duties in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing the location(s) they are working. Direct Support professional must also follow all policies and procedures that apply to the performance and duties of their job. This position is responsible for administering client programs & goals and ensuring the client's personal needs are satisfied in a safe manner.
What will my day-to-day look like as a Direct Support Professional?
- Provide opportunities through the day to help residents meet their goals.
- Adhere to the person-centered plans, and behavior plans as written for the resident.
- Provide quality of care and safe and healthy setting free from harm while upholding the rights of the resident.
- Create a space of trust and relationship with the resident.
- Cook meals as necessary for residents based upon food specifications and diets
- Transport resident and attend appointments, advocate, and obtain necessary documentation, when needed.
- Assist with supervision of residents doing their laundry and complete facility laundry as needed.
- Administer medications as prescribed by physicians and monitor vital signs.
- Must remain awake and immediately accessible in all homes requiring 24 / 7 care.
Working Conditions
Works in the residential program and is required to move frequently throughout the building and grounds. May have a specified work desk or area. Will be required to assist individuals as needed in each of these settings. May need to transport individuals supported in staff vehicle. May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset individuals, family members, personnel and visitors as situations arise. May be subject to slippery conditions on the grounds due to weather. May be exposed to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, including TB and Hepatitis B viruses. May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
