What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Advocate - Full Time position at Council on Domestic Abuse, Inc. (CODA)?
The Council on Domestic Abuse, Inc. is searching for a legal advocate to work Mondays-Fridays from 8am-4pm in our office within the Vigo County Courthouse. Occasionally, this position may work from the CODA Emergency Shelter, or in the other counties we service (Clay, Sullivan, Parke and Vermillion).
Legal advocates work directly with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to help them navigate the criminal justice system. Responsibilities include assisting victims with legal paperwork, accompanying them to court proceedings, providing education sessions that include danger assessments and explaining the importance of safety planning, filing, monitoring court proceedings, answering the office phone, etc. Applicants must be able to calmly deliver crisis counseling in many diverse situations over the phone and in person.
Experience with the criminal justice system and/or social work is preferred. There are no health benefits available for this position and funding is based on annual grant renewals, which are subject to change.
