The Urgent and Emergency Care team, UHND comprises of ED,SDEC and AMU. There have been significant changes to the Front of House withthe addition of Same Day Emergency Care and the agreed expansion of the medicalworkforce which makes us an attractive place to work for anyone who wishes toexperience true team work between clinicians, managers and patients.

Main duties of the job
The main duties of the advertised post will be as follows :
To provide Emergency Medicine services in UniversityHospital North Durham. The post holder will be expected to provide acomprehensive clinical service together with consultant colleagues. The Consultant has a continuingresponsibility for the care of patients in their charge. The Consultant will be responsible inconjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of theseservices. Specific clinical areasinclude :
Supervision of and assistance to junior and middle grademedical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners
To act as Team Leader in the resuscitation of seriouslytraumatised patients and those with critical illness.
To conduct review clinics
To provide a Consultant presence daily in line with job plan
Give advice over the telephone or attend the department asrequired when on call on a one in 8 basis.
Participate in the senior doctor rota performing clinicalduties and acting as medical co-ordinator.
Assist in the smooth integration of theEmergency Department and Urgent Care services.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities
In addition to the main duties listed above if the appointeehas trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and would be involved in thefuture development of a front of house Paediatric service
The post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensiveclinical service to consultant colleagues in clinical disciplines in theHospital and to General Practitioners.Involvement in strategic service planning will be expected, as willexchange of information needed to ensure effective service delivery.
For management purposes and use of resources the post holderswill be accountable to the Care Group Clinical Director and will ensure theeffective and efficient use of resources allocated.
The appointee will participate in the Emergency Medicineon-call rota as part of a team of consultants.
The appointee will be expected to provide cover whencolleagues are on annual and study / professional leave.
Research activities which are considered to be an inherentpart of normal clinical duties will be encouraged and limited research fundingmay be available following successful application to the local research anddevelopment committee.
Administrative duties the post holder will have continuingresponsibility at all times for the care of patients in their charge and forcontributing in the smooth running of the service. The post holders will also be expected toshare the administrative duties with the other consultants including attendanceat Care Group and Departmental meetings, etc.
The post holder will be responsible for the professionalsupervision and management of junior staff to ensure standards of care aremaintained. Development of individuals and of teams is part of the consultantrole.
The appointee will be expected to participate in thepostgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trustand in the training of all grades of staff.
CPD - the post holder is responsible for ensuring that theymeet the College requirements for CPD.
It is expected that the appointees will actively andregularly participate in Clinical Audit. Evaluation of the departmentsperformance against agreed measures will take place.
If the post holder is involved in the care of a patient whosubsequently initiates a claim against the Trust they will be expected toprovide, free of a charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in themanagement of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department
To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-daymanagement of the Emergency Department
Teaching and Training of intermediate and, junior medicalstaff, nursing staff, medical students and paramedic staff
To actively participate in both departmental and Trustmatters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
To have responsibility for and actively participate incontinuing professional development (CPD).
The new appointee will be expected to join the consultantbody in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging with thejuniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursing staffto ensure adequate patient flow.
The appointees will be expected to be involvedin implementing the Trusts clinical governanceprogramme.This includes active participation in clinical audit, clinical guidelines / pathways,and professional development, appraisal and risk management.
