Job summary

Thepost holder will work with minimal supervision and will be designated to takecharge

of the ward / department inthe absence of the ward manager; who holds continuing responsibility

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will assist the ward manager in the smooth delivery of a highstandard of care to those patients with repsiratory illnesses.

Alongside their RGN rolethey will also be responsible for managing staff in terms of recruitment,sickness monitoring, educational needs, learning events and any disciplinaryactions.

They will also beresponsible for answering any safeguarding concerns and putting actions inplace to learn form these incidents.

Auditting will be part ofthe role also and giving feedback following these.

Service improvement ideaswill be explored and actioned if appropriate.

Key responsibilities willinclude the development, implementation and evaluation of programmesof care, effective leadership and staff management / development.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

ClinicalResponsibilities

  • To assess individual careneeds, develop, implement and evaluate care given to

patients in conjunctionwith the multidisciplinary team.

  • To ensure thatcommunication with patients and significant others is established and
  • maintained to provideappropriate information regarding care and treatment.

  • To prioritise own workand that of others to ensure that patient care is managed
  • effectively and safely

  • Maintain accurate andcomprehensive nursing records, using appropriate
  • documentation and ITsystems; ensuring adherence to NMC guidelines.

  • Support theimplementation and evaluation of quality initiatives at ward level.
  • Ensure that nursingpractice reflects current clinical developments and is based on
  • current evidence basedpractice and accurately reflects the wards philosophy.

  • In support of the wardmanager will assist in the review and update of procedures and
  • protocols relating to thecare of patients.

    Management Responsibilities

  • In the absence of theward manager be responsible for the day-to-day effective and
  • efficient management ofnursing, clerical and support staff within the ward.

  • Responsible formonitoring the workload / patient acuity within the ward on a daily basis
  • to ensure that nursingmanpower is adequate to provide a safe standard of nursing

    care.

  • Ensure the cost-effectiveand appropriate use of manpower and materials with
  • consideration and dueregard to budgetary control.

  • To participate in therecruitment and selection of staff ensuring adherence to CDDFT
  • policy

  • To investigate accidents,incidents and complaints, implementing corrective actions
  • where necessary, inconsultation with the ward manager.

  • To resolve conflict atward level, defusing situations where possible.
  • To participate in themonitoring and management of staff absence ensuring adherence
  • to CDDFT policy.

  • To participate in staffinduction, appraisal and personal development planning.
  • To actively facilitatethe implementation of clinical supervision
  • To ensure there iseffective communication systems in place to allow staff to keep
  • abreast of developments inthe organisation.

  • To be involved inensuring the appropriate application of CDDFT Human Resources
  • Policies.

  • To be familiar with theHealth & Safety at Works Act, and be aware of its implications
  • and ensure that ward andTrust policies are followed.

    Leadership Responsibilities

  • To act as an appropriateand effective role model at all times.
  • To act as an effectivementor and preceptor and support other ward staff in performing
  • this role.

  • To act as a resource, supportingand motivating staff members.
  • To keep abreast of andparticipate in, local and Trust initiatives.
  • EducationalResponsibilities

  • To promote a learningenvironment that facilitates the development of staff enabling
  • staff to develop to theirfull potential.

  • To assist the wardmanager in ensuring that all staff attend mandatory training and
  • receive continuingdevelopment and appropriate education; maintaining accurate

    records of training.

  • To assist in thefacilitation of teaching and clinical assessment of pre and post
  • registration nurses andhealth care assistants.

  • To be involved with thedissemination of information regarding new or updated clinical
  • practices, guidelines andpolicies to all ward nursing staff.

  • To participate in trainingneeds analysis for ward.
  • To assist in the trainingand education of new members of staff in relation to Non invasive ventilation.To ensure that the ward based qualified staff have met the relevantcompetencies in relation to non-invasive ventilation.

    Essential

  • Broad range of clinical experience
  • Desirable

  • Evidence of dealing with patients in an acute medical setting
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Level 1 Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Educated to Diploma level
  • Desirable

  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Special Requirements

  • NIV experience
  • Background of respiratory
  • Special Skills & Knowledge
