DESCRIPTION
The Alameda County Social Services Agency (SSA) is comprised of 2,400 men and women working collectively and in partnership with community-based organizations to serve the needs of the community. Services are provided through four departments : Administration and Finance, Adult and Aging Services, Children and Family Services, and Workforce and Benefits Administration. THE POSITION
Adult Protective Services Workers are located exclusively in the Adult and Aging Services Department of the Social Services Agency. Positions allocated to these classes are distinguished from those in the social work series by the specialized nature of the work focusing on the needs of elders and dependent adults that are in need of protective services.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have :
- Knowledge regarding programs and regulations applicable to Adult Protective Services and will remain informed regarding community resources and their appropriate utilization.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.
- Outstanding analytical skills, with a demonstrated ability to think logically and arrive at sound conclusions.
- The ability to relate well to people from varied backgrounds, show understanding, courtesy, and present oneself in a diplomatic, professional manner.
- Remarkable organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and accomplish multiple projects simultaneously, take prompt action to achieve objectives as well as identify issues as they arise and address them proactively.
- The ability to work well under pressure; performing calmly and professionally while working under time constraints.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either Pattern I
Education :
Possession of a Master's Degree in Social Welfare, Counseling, Psychology, Gerontology or a related behavioral science, from an accredited college or university, which included a supervised field placement providing social casework and counseling services to dependent adults and families.
Experience :
The equivalent of one year of full-time experience providing ongoing social casework and / or counseling services to the elderly and / or adults with disabilities.
Or Pattern II
Experience :
The equivalent of three years of full-time experience as an Adult Protective Services Worker I in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.),
Special Requirement :
Recommendation for promotion based on the performance evaluation.
Or Pattern III
Education :
Experience :
The equivalent of three years of full-time experience providing ongoing social casework and / or counseling services to the elderly and / or adults with disabilities.
License :
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following steps : 1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. 2) Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to an oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
