What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Control Officer position at COUNTY OF BLOUNT?

The Animal Control Officer enforces animal control regulations and laws. Additionally, the incumbent enforces quarantine on bite animals. As an ambassador for Blount County Animal Center (BCAC), the Animal Control Officer engages with the citizens of Blount County community via various activities, service calls, and events offered at BCAC. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Learn and implement knowledge of BCAC departments practices, policies, and systems;
  • Enforce animal control laws;
  • Set traps for animals and remove vicious animals when appropriate;
  • Generate bite reports and quarantine bite animals;
  • Fill out and maintain paperwork and records;
  • Impound animal when appropriate;
  • Perform euthanasia on animals when necessary;
  • Rescue hurt or sick animals;
  • Ensure there is an animal control officer available for emergency calls;
  • Answer all calls when the animal has no food or water reported;
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment;
  • Successfully use or repair small and light equipment, such as power tools;
  • Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines and/or multi-line telephone systems, and computers for data entry; and
  • Perform other assigned duties as required of an Animal Control Officer.

It is mandatory for the Animal Control Officer to:

  • Bolster and sustain a professional demeanor at all times with the public, colleagues, and other agencies;
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships within BCAC, including but not limited to BCAC volunteers, and all stakeholders associated with the BCAC; and
  • Capable of performing work assignments in all weather conditions and/or while surrounded with excess noises from animals: dogs barking, etc.; and
  • Thrive working in a diverse community and fluid working environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

  • High School Diploma;
  • Two (2) years of experience;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience;
  • Current euthansia license or the ability to complete training and pass licensing requirements;
  • Pre-exposure protection, three (3) doses of rabies vaccine is required and paid for by the County; and a
  • Valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach and manipulate objects, tools and/or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 100 pounds on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines. The position requires hearing, mental acuity, speaking, and visual acuity.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern kennel setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning, or outside in conditions which may include heat, cold, rain, or other inclement weather.
