The Burlington County Animal Shelter (BCAS) seeks a fulltime Shelter Veterinarian to perform various Veterinary services. The BCAS is not an animal hospital but an animal shelter that provides care, shelter, vaccinations, spay/neuter services and temporary housing until animals find their forever homes. In addition to dogs and cats, the shelter does receive small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs etc.) at times.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Assumes responsibilities of Veterinarian of Record.
· Supervises the medical team (3 veterinarian technicians) and all associated management responsibilities
· Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining federal and state requirements.
· Establishes protocols for pre-operative and post-operative care and trains Veterinary Technicians and BCAS staff on such protocols.
· Performs spay/neuter surgeries on adopted, impounded, or owned dogs and cats including pre-pubescent sterilizations, minor surgeries incident to spay/neuter procedures, non-minor surgeries as approved by BCAS management.
· Administers vaccinations and microchips to appropriate animals.
· Performs medical examinations on animals for which the department is responsible and prescribes, performs, and oversees recommended treatments as may be necessary.
· Maintains animal health and treatment records as required.
· Works to ensure the general health and welfare of sheltered animals by providing guidance and training to staff and volunteers.
· Provide emergency medical veterinary care that is limited care which is necessary as a first aid measure to minimize pain and suffering and stabilize the condition of the animal under the care and custody of BCAS.
· Addresses disease issues in the shelter through the development and implementation of appropriate sanitation, infection control and health management protocols.
· Monitors animals being held in quarantine for signs of illness and makes recommendations for care and treatment.
· Through continuing education, stays current on new trends, protocols, and opportunities to improve animal care, surgical protocols, and techniques, sanitation, disease control, etc.
· Assists in training staff on matters of shelter health, sanitation, animal handling, and other related areas.
· Reports any issues or concerns immediately to the BCAS management and assists in the resolution of problems related to animal health.
· This position reports directly to the Health Officer/Director
· Communicating with staff, adopters, rescues, and volunteers will be needed.
· Ability to respond to hoarding or animal cruelty situations
· Performs other duties as necessary which are related to or logically associated with this position.
Licenses
· Possession of a current, valid license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine issued by the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
· Must be in possession of or has the ability to possess a valid DEA and valid CDS license for the ordering and use of controlled drugs for the shelter
Salary: $150,000/year (negotiable)
