BASIC FUNCTIONS:
- The Level I Watercraft Inspector serves to inform and educate the public to the threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species to Minnesota's waters. Inspectors work at public water access sites inspecting watercraft for invasive species, and educating the public by providing information to watercraft users and conducting a brief survey.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties
- Provide information to boat landing visitors and the public regarding Minnesota laws pertaining to aquatic invasive species.
- Inspect boats, trailers, tow vehicles and related equipment for aquatic plants, animals or water on board.
- Conduct a brief survey with boat landing visitors.
- Collect and record data in accordance with the program.
- May include compiling and analyzing survey data into useful formats to enhance education, facilitate review and provide direction for future actions.
- Coordinate efforts with fellow watercraft inspectors and Zoning and Environmental Services Department.
- Coordinate enforcement efforts with Department of Natural Resources and Carlton County Sheriffs Office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Current high school student with interest in natural resources or law enforcement career field; OR
- High school graduate pursuing education or a degree in one of the following: Biology, Natural Resources, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Environmental Science or Law Enforcement. Other degrees acceptable.
Training Required:
- Department of Natural Resources Level I Watercraft Inspector training (Provided upon hire).
Certificates/Licenses Required:
- Must hold a valid Minnesota drivers license and proof of insurance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated interest in environmental work through education, volunteer work and/or hobbies.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate with the public in a one-to-one manner.
- Willingness to work weekends and in adverse weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of harmful aquatic invasive species and their impact on Minnesota resources.
- Experience compiling and analyzing data into useful formats to enhance education, facilitate review and provide direction for future actions.
