General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work setting up work zones, erecting and removing traffic barricades, performing flagging and other traffic control duties, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Division Chief. Continuous Supervision is exercised over inmates as assigned.

Essential Functions

Oversees, trains and participates in flagging, pilot vehicles, and work zone traffic control functions associated with the construction, maintenance and repair of County roadways with inmates.

Performs flagging work, installs stop bars, erects and removes traffic barricades; operates various equipment such as a thermoplastic road marking machine.

Enforces rules and regulations of county prison and accepted Department of Corrections standards for inmates under supervision; Supervises a detail of inmates performing traffic control and flagging duties.

Performs routine head counts and searches inmates for contraband or unauthorized materials; maintains accountability and escorts inmates to and from work assignments.

Trains inmates in proper procedures to perform flagging and work zone traffic control functions.

Assists with seasonal or emergency roadway maintenance issues such as debris removal, flooding and windstorms, snow removal and ice control.

Operates county vehicle in performance of duties.

Prepares records and reports.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of security requirements for a correctional institution and ability to control and supervise inmates consistent with accepted DOC standards. Thorough knowledge of the principles of work zone safety; thorough knowledge of modern traffic safety programs, methods and techniques; ; general knowledge of general traffic laws and regulations; ability to work for short periods of time in inclement weather; ability to properly set up various types work zones properly suited to the specific work to be performed; ability to handle routine clerical and record; ability to plan, schedule and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to supervise the activities of small groups of inmates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in traffic control, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Prerequisite for this position is successful completion of a basic skills test that meets the standard for Peace Officer Standards and Training certification - if selected for consideration you will be provided information on the skills test.

Obtain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Correctional Officer certification and National Safety Council Flagger certifications within six months, which requires :

• At least 18 years of age
• A US Citizen
• High School diploma or state issued GED Certificate
• Possess good moral character
• Complete a personal interview
• Free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect exercising the essential tasks or duties of a peace officer
• Successfully complete the POST Entrance Examinations (Accuplacer)
• No felony convictions, misdemeanor of domestic violence or multiple misdemeanors

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver's license in the State of Georgia with favorable driving history (MVR).
