Job Summary
This is a temporary position.
Responsible for providing library services and programs for children, and customer assistance for the County Library. Duties include working at the youth services desk; assisting customers with locating materials; conducting reference searches; and instructing patrons on the use of library materials and materials.
Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plans, presents, and evaluations programs and activities for children, including weekly early literacy story times, monthly school age STEM programming and summer reading
- Develops an awareness and understanding of the trends in children’s services and the diverse interst of youth in the community the Library servces
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian with selecting books and other library materias for the youth services collection with particular emphasis on children’s materials
- Regularly staffs the youth services deskm providing expectional customer service, information gathering asisstance, and technology support to customers ages birth to 18 and their caregivers
- Provides reference and readers’ adivsory to customers. Reads widley from the youth collection, with particular emphasis on the juvenile collections
- Represents the Library through youth services outreach with various community groups, including schools, daycares, and other organizations serving children
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian with the creation of library displays and booklists for children
- Assists with the creating of publicity materials for youth services
- Plans and assists with other youth services programs for tweens and teens, including summer reading, as needed.
- Ability to supervise and direct teen volunteers assisting with youth services tasks and programming
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists with reading shelves to keep books and materials in proper order; Reorganizes books which are incorrectly shelved
- Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of assigned functions including filing, answering phones, etc.
- Performs related duties as required
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree with experience working in a library with youth.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
Bilingual, preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to effectively communicate with customers and co-workers, orally and in writing.
- Ability to provide the highest level of customer service to a wide variety of library users.
- Ability to operate various office technology, including telephones, computers, copies, etc.
- Ability to use Microsoft Word at an intermediate level.
- Ability to work and interact with children and teens.
- Familiarity with the social, intellectual, and emotional needs of children.
- Willingness to develop knowledge of children’s literature.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate as a team player.
- Ability to exercise judgement, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of age appropriate materials for youth.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate. Tasks typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 40 pounds_. May involve long periods of standing, carrying books, and requires the ability to push and pull a fully loaded cart of books to a designated location which may weigh up to 300 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in a library. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
