What are the responsibilities and job description for the Permit Technician position at County of Culpeper?
Responsible for performing tasks associated with the permits for construction of both commercial and residential projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Processes building permits, trade permits and schedules inspections
- Performs various record maintenance duties for the department and its programs, including both manual and electronic records. Enters, updates and retrieves data from department program files and routes to the applicable end user
- Collects and processes fees for department services
- Assist customers with any inquiries, questions, etc.
- Maintains department files; files documents with appropriate case, or record; retrieves information and files as requested
- Maintains mailing lists, schedules, and other records for department operations
- Coordinates meetings, appointments, and/or schedules for department staff
- Prepares correspondence, forms, letter, and other documents as requested
- Orders office supplies
- Reviews invoices, prepares accounts payable documents and submits for payment
- Performs routine clerical duties related to emailing, faxing, scanning, copying, distributing inner office correspondence and preparing outgoing mail
- Retrieves information from other departments and or agencies as required
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Update and maintain department website
- Maintain plan storage inventory
- Other duties assigned
Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check
Will be required to complete the basic course of study for Permit Technician and become certified as a Permit Technician within 12 months of hiring
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to perform technical review of permit applications and construction documents
- Knowledge of construction and building code terminology and code requirements
- Knowledge of various software programs such as Word, Excel, etc.
- Ability to learn new software and programs as needed
- Ability to operate various office equipment such as a computer, fax, phone, etc.
- Ability to express orally and in writing
- Ability to exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with customers
- Ability to perform mathematical operations
- Ability to reference data such as policy manuals and regulations
- Ability to perform the highest level of customer service
- Ability to work in a team environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift 10-20 pounds. Must be able to operate office and computer equipment; may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Must be able to communicate orally and perceive and discriminate colors and shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in an office setting.
