Bi-weekly Salary: Correctional Deputy Recruit: $1,555.16 - $1,714.56The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office is seeking a qualified candidate to fill two (2) vacancies for the position of Correctional Deputy Recruit. This position is classified as Full-Time. Under close supervision and in a training capacity, supervises inmates during assigned shift at the County jail facility.This is the training classification in the Correctional Deputy series. Incumbents of this class are in a training capacity for one year. After successful completion of this training period, incumbents are eligible for advancement to the next higher class of Correctional Deputy I.Sheriff’s Correctional Deputies are custodial officers as described in California Penal Code 831 and are public officers, not peace officers. A custodial officer does not have the right to carry or possess firearms in the performance of prescribed duties, except, under the direction of the Sheriff, while engaged in transporting prisoners or guarding hospitalized prisoners. Custodial officers may make arrests for misdemeanors and felonies within the local detention facility pursuant to a duly issued warrant.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.• Assists in the supervision, security and conduct of inmates in cells, during meals, bathing, at recreation, during visitation and on work or other assignments.• Assists in processing prisoners admitted and discharged or transferred from the jail facility.• Processes inmate discharges or transfers and arranges for transportation if necessary.• Maintains records related to inmates.• Promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates to assist them in adjusting to a confinement setting.• Receives and maintains the personal property of inmates.• Opens and censors inmate mail.• Learns techniques and methods employed in searching inmates for contraband, weapons or possession or use of narcotics.• Assists in inspecting quarters of inmates for contraband.• Enforces sanitary conditions and orderliness of quarters.• Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledge of: • Basic functions of a local law enforcement agency.• Basic correctional facility functions.Ability to: • Complete PC 832 and J.T.O. training programs.• Learn the methods of controlling, directing and instructing inmates individually and in groups.• Read and interpret written material accurately and rapidly.• Promote socially acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates.• Make quick, effective and reasonable decisions in emergencies and to take the appropriate action.• Carry out oral and written directions and instructions.Equipment Used: Handguns, batons, restraint devices, manual and electronic doors, typewriter, computer terminal, dispatch control panels, televised surveillance equipment, motorized vehicles.Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily indoors in both quiet and noisy environments, with occasional work performed in cramped confined spaces. There is a significant exposure to body fluids and infectious agents including blood borne viruses, which can produce chronic disease or death. Tasks performed present an exposure to dust and airborne particles such as found in a firing range or in the exercise yard. Equipment used and tasks performed present a risk of body injuries (cuts, bruises, sprains, and fractures).Typical Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical demands descried here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with a disability to perform the essential functions.Mental Requirements: Alertness, concentration, good judgment, patience, memory, problem solving, initiative and the ability to remain calm in threatening, combative and/or confrontational situations. Must be able to effectively assist and/or subdue angry, violent, suicidal, psychologically disturbed or mentally ill individuals. The ability to remain alert during long periods of inactivity is necessary.Hearing: Adequate to hear and understand conversation in both quiet and noisy environments with the ability to localize from which direction a sound is coming. An employee must possess the ability to discriminate among both speech and non-speech sounds, such as; to hear and correctly understand individuals being interviewed, to hear and correctly understand radio transmission, to hear scuffling, opening and closing of doors, and the approach of individuals; and hearing adequate to anticipate unsafe or threatening situations.Vision: Must be adequate to meet DMV criteria for required licensing. Accuracy in far vision is necessary such as to determine whether someone twenty feet away is holding a gun or a non-weapon item. If an officer who wears corrective lenses loses the glasses or lenses, the employee must have adequate uncorrected vision to take appropriate action and be able to identify individuals.Coordination & Dexterity: Arm strength and range of motion, which is sufficient to write or subdue and handcuff wards. Coordination and explosive strength to sprint in emergency situations and be able to communicate and perform tasks at the end of the situation. Finger dexterity and arm-hand steadiness adequate to search wards and premises. Must have ability to move arms or legs rapidly such as to use weaponless defense.Physical Strength: Must have strength to lift, push, pull and carry heavy objects, such as to move jail furniture, open heavy metal doors, move injured persons or assist an uncooperative adult into a jail cell. Trunk strength and stamina for repeated activities is necessary. Examples of Necessary Strength: Moving and/or carrying heavy or awkward objects such as an injured or unconscious person.Carrying and transporting objects up to forty pounds such as office or jail supplies, equipment and frozen foods.Moving injured or unconscious adults over a stretch of fifty or more feet.Carrying heavy awkward objects such as emergency breathing apparatus on the shoulders, weighing forty to fifty pounds, while walking.Pushing weights of up to 100 pounds such as to forcefully open locked doors or move objects obstructing access to a location.Reaching, stretching and using hands above the waist for extended periods of time such as to operate a vehicle, safety equipment, TV monitors, jail control buttons, and dispatch control buttons.
