Supervising Behavioral Health Specialist : $2,059.38 - $ 2,478.59
The Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Supervising Behavioral Health Specialist. This position is classified as FULL-TIME.
Under supervision performs a wide variety of routine to complex mental health tasks in the delivery of services, crisis intervention and medication support services; to provide outreach emergency services in crisis situations; and to supervise staff and specific programs or units in a lead person capacity. This work consists of complex and technical paraprofessional duties at a lead person level.
Supervising Behavioral Health Specialist is the most experienced level in this skilled class and is assigned paraprofessional, complex duties in the delivery of behavioral health services and supervision of staff and programs or units.
Employees in this classification receive direct to limited supervision within a framework of policy and procedures and supervise personnel, programs and / or units. Errors in work or judgment could result in inappropriate diagnosis, poor community relations, and / or possible litigation against the County. This position classification is supervisory and exempt from the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
Detailed Work Activities

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
- Provides psychiatric work involving children and adults that includes rehabilitation counseling on an individual, group or family basis.
- Evaluates patients in a variety of settings including field situations for development of service plans and serves as coordinator when required.
- Serves as a member of the quality improvement / multidisciplinary team providing critical clinical input relating to patient diagnosis and recommended service plans.
- Provides direction and supervision, training and support for assigned staff.
- Performs program planning to develop and implement services appropriate to assisting adult and child psychiatric patients.
- Participates in case conference and consults with psychiatric staff to review patient cases and medication issues and quality assurance / peer review functions.
- Evaluates patients for voluntary and involuntary commitment and signs commitment documents for clients requiring hospitalization when necessary.
- Prepares detailed patient record documentation and maintains case records, including intake and referral plans, progress notes, child and adult clinical assessments.
- Provides consultation to a wide variety of local agencies and resources including medical community, hospital emergency room, schools, social services agencies, jail, juvenile hall, etc., and courtroom testimony regarding conservatorships when necessary.
- Serves as staff to the access coordination team providing a wide range of crisis and evaluate services including performing triage.
- Performs educational services to specific patients or segments of the mental health population.
- Conducts mental health education and training programs throughout the community and within the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be :
Pattern 1 : A baccalaureate degree in behavioral science, psychology or a related field; and at least one (1) year of responsible experience in the Behavioral Health or Social Services field; and the demonstrated ability to work independently and to train and oversee the work of others in a lead person or supervisory capacity.
Pattern 2 : Licensure as a registered nurse, psychiatric technician or vocational nurse and a minimum of two (2) years of college course work in a closely related field and at least one (1) year of responsible experience in the Behavioral Health or Social Services field and the demonstrated ability to work independently and to train and oversee the work of others in a lead person or supervisory capacity.
Pattern 3 : A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Behavioral Health Specialist position, or equivalent position in the Behavioral Health or Social Services field; and at least two (2) years of responsible experience in the Behavioral Health or Social Services field performing clinical or case management services; and the demonstrated ability to work independently and to train and oversee the work of others in a lead person or supervisory capacity.
Desirable Qualifications : Bachelor's degree in behavioral science, psychology or closely related field.
Special Requirements :
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license.
All County of Del Norte employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through State law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County of Del Norte requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Work related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
If assigned to supervising the Mobile Crisis Team, must successfully complete any State required training prior to assignment.
