Starting Wage Range: $16.94/hr. 1st year to $17.20/hr. 2nd year

Typical hours: Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 4:00 pm


Essential Functions

  • Performs general highway maintenance and related activities as assigned, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, roadway vegetation control, trash, and building and facilities maintenance repairs.
  • Operates equipment as required, including but not limited to, trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, and similar equipment of comparable size and complexity.
  • Operate various hand tools.
  • Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  • Report all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents, or personal injuries.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and storage areas.
  • Report to Juneau or outlying shops as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Work Environment

  • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers, and utilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable attendance
  • Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment safely and properly.
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Frequently requires standing, speaking, or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel and repetitive motions, and occasionally requires sitting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work is frequently performed in a noisy environment, around mechanical equipment, and chemicals.
  • Work will include outdoors in seasonal weather extremes.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work products while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Ability to safely perform flagging operations in accordance with industry requirements, training and certification will be provided.

Experience

Required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.
  • Valid drivers license
Preferred
  • Previous experience driving midsize vehicles pulling trailers
  • First aid and CPR training.
