Administers expert emergency medical care to alleviate human suffering from accidental injury or sudden illness at the scene of an accident or illness and during transportation to a medical facility. Responsible for providing truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.
Essential Job Functions
- Administer emergency medical treatment to the injured or ill within the EMT-B Scope of Practice.
- Transport treated patients to the most appropriate medical facility.
- Remain proficient in skill level (training).
- Maintain cleanliness and check general maintenance of emergency vehicles. Ensure adequate stock of medical supplies are available.
- Complete various reports related to provided medical treatment. These reports include patient care report, charge sheet, Medicare forms, Medicare charge sheets, and release sheets.
- Drive ambulance safely and operate all emergency related equipment properly. Assist with the maintenance of ambulance garage.
- Provide public relations programs to schools, civic groups, scouts, fire departments, and community organizations.
- Report discrepancies and unusual occurrences to Director or Captains.
- Must be ready to respond immediately at all times.
General Job Functions
- Serves in either on-call or on station rotation with other Advanced or Basic EMT’s and/or Medics and responds to calls for aid and assistance.
- Performs maintenance tasks and assignments at the direction of Director or Captains.
Required Training and Experience
- Must be a licensed Emergency Medical Technician-Basic in the State of Wisconsin.
- NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications must be completed within 6 months of start date.
- Current valid driver’s license.
Preferred Training and Experience
- A minimum of one year or progressive work experiences as an EMT-Basic in an emergency medical treatment environment is desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of emergency pre-hospital medical treatment procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of geography of Door County including roads, parks, landmarks, and short-cuts.
- Capable of remaining calm and effective in emergency situations. Able to deal with emotions of others and show compassion.
- Requires good physical endurance and strength due to required lifting and carrying of some patients. Work many hours without relief in times of multiple requests for medical treatment.
- Able to operate EMT and reserve equipment properly. Must be capable of driving ambulance or other county emergency vehicles properly.
- Capable of analyzing the situation at site of emergency treatment and react properly to sustain someone’s life. Must make decisions accurately and rapidly that affect another person’s physical well-being.
- Able to keep confidential the information in reports and personal medical data gathered or encountered.
- Comprehend various complex radio communication systems which involve fire, police, sheriff, medical personnel, DNR, and other life support networks.
- Ability to deal with people firmly, but with tact and courtesy.
- Ability to meet department standards of physical condition.
- Ability to use tact and courtesy in maintaining an effective working relationship with department employees, county supervisors, county officials, and general public.
