What are the responsibilities and job description for the Stand-By Bridge Tender position at County of Door?
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the draw bridges in Door County. In addition, duties include doing maintenance and repairs. Reports directly to the the Highway Commissioner or their designee and indirectly to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the United States Coast Guard.
Training and ExperienceThere are no benefits with this position.
- Operates bridge openings in a safe, effective, and efficient manner to prevent injury or damage to boaters, pedestrians, or vehicle operators.
- Performs repairs or requests repairs if the bridge does not operate properly.
- Conducts minor maintenance limited to, grease bearings, pinion gears, racks, and gates.
- Maintains records of bridge openings and closings.
- Maintains and installs clearance guards, removes snow from sidewalk, gates, and gears, and minor touch up painting. Keeps work area clean.
- Operate two-way radio in communicating with ships and boats and Highway Department office.
Training and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of responsible work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Must complete confined space awareness training.
- Must have normal or corrected 20/20 vision, depth perception and freedom from night blindness.
- Must have normal or corrected hearing. Normal hearing is considered to be between 0 and 25 db. The audiometric average threshold should be no more that 25db at 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 6000 Hz, with no individual level greater than 30 db.
- Ability to read, comprehend, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to react quickly to traffic situations involving vehicular, pedestrian and vessel traffic.
- Ability to determine and react to security issues regarding bridge operations.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance duties on the bridges replacing navigation lamps, inspecting and removing debris from track girders or rear locks, and cleaning and greasing center locks.
- Ability to keep clear and accurate records concerning vessel movements, maintenance activities, equipment malfunctions, or accident information occurring on the bridge.
- Knowledge of, and have experience with, heavy-duty mechanical/electrical equipment.
- Ability to continuously monitor video monitors and audio equipment, ensuring safe gate operation and safe passage of vessels on locally and/or remotely operated bridges.
- Ability to learn and understand the regulations governing bridge opening protocol such as the U.S. Coast Guard regulations governing waterways and bridges.
