Position Summary: The county health nurse performs general nursing activities relating to public health within Ford County. Duties of this position include: conducting medical care and treatment clinics to the county, administrating immunizations, providing services in accordance with maternal, prenatal, child and infant care programs, maintaining client records, and other related public health nursing activities. The position conducts Tuberculosis, Lead, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus screenings.

Work of an LPN is performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/Clinical Director and in accordance with established department policies and procedures. 

Work of an RN is performed with professional independence and in accordance with established department policies and procedures.

These positions are under direct supervision of the County Health Administrator and the Clinical Director.

Essential Function Statement(s)

  • Demonstrate and implement nursing procedures in clinic and family care – including prenatal, postpartum, infant (Women, Infant & Children) and pre-school care.
  • Instruct clients concerning medical care and nutrition.
  • Perform physical assessments for Women, Infants & Children, kindergarten, daycare and children with Medicaid.
  • Implement the school health programs including immunization audits of clients, vision, hearing and dental screening, scoliosis checks, and educational health films.
  • Perform outreach physical examination services to senior citizens, children, and other citizens by monitoring elevated blood pressures, immunizations, and infections.
  • Monitor immunization records of all clients receiving services in the health department, including Women, Infant &Children clients.
  • Confer with parents, physicians, dentist, school personnel and other groups to conduct selected educational classes or clinics relating to public health methods and procedures.
  • Report and monitor communicable disease occurrences.
  • Promote breastfeeding through personal comment with every prenatal or postpartum Woman, Infant &Children client.
  • Assess Maternal & Infant clients through histories, physicals and health education.
  • Monitor Maternal & Infant financial assistance that is available for medical care.
  • Refer and schedule appointments for clients with a physician when necessary.
  • Confer with local health officer and related public officials in planning educational health programs in the community.
  • Type, file, and process required state forms and reports as required by the program guidelines.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Experience:  A graduate of an approved school of nursing. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills after less than six months in the position.

Education:  Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Relicensure with current CEU’s per state requirements.

Skills:  Comprehensive knowledge of public health issues including growth, development and nutritional needs of infants and pregnant women. A thorough understanding of the availability and application of medications and immunizations is required.

Problem Solving:  Daily problem solving may exist. Problems may involve the handling of client inquiries within time and spatial constraints.

Decision Making:  Limited decision-making in the determination of client health status and future treatment exists. Major decisions on client care are referred to a physician.

Accountability:  Employee follows the guidelines of the various programs (examples: Women, Infant & Children, Maternal & Infant, Lead, Tuberculosis, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus screenings) and department policies and procedures.

Supervision:  Limited supervision provided by the supervisor. Job-related decisions are made independently and may be reviewed by the administrator or supervisor.

Personal Relations: Frequent contact with county departments and continual contact with the general public.

Working Conditions:  Possible exposure to infectious disease. Little physical effort is exerted in this position.
