Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Road & Bridge Superintendent, the Sign Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all traffic signs within the Ford County road system.  The employee in this position maintains an inventory of traffic signs and determines where signs are to be placed according to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Essential Function Statement(s)

 

  • Installs and maintains all traffic signs within the Ford County road system;
  • Maintains an inventory of all signs posted along the county roads;
  • Maintains all records of sign placement and condition;
  • Researches the correct size and type of sign needed;
  • Responsible for inventory control of signs, posts, etc.;
  • Performs traffic counts, down loads information and obtain reports;
  • Advises and assists in the proper installation and upkeep of construction signs during road projects;
  • Maintain records with computer programs that the County maintains;
  • Responsible for notifying Kansas One Call prior to installing sign posts;

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist other County departments as requested.
  • Other related duties as necessary or required.

 

Position qualifications

Competency Statement(s)

  • Pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screen and health assessment
  • Legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of Kansas
  • Verified form I-9 eligibility to work in the United States

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Experience:  Experience in construction required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after 6 months in the position. 

Education:  High school diploma or GED required.  A Class B CDL Kansas driver’s license is preferred.

Skills:  Knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.  The ability to operate a posthole auger, air compressor, leveling instruments and hand tools.  Computer knowledge is critical to this position. 

Problem Solving:  Problem solving exists in this position.  Problems include vandalized signs.

Decision Making:  Decision making exists in this position.  Decisions include determining when and where to install or replace signs.

Accountability:  Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual budget process.

Supervision:  Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the Road Supervisor.  Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

Personal Relations:  Occasional contact with other county departments and the general public.

Working Conditions:  Manual labor is required and adverse weather conditions are factors in this position.
