OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:
Supervise and manage the care, custody and control in inmates at the Greene County Prison. Worker is required to oversee and direct the inmates from initial incarceration through weekend presentation and/or work release situations. Supervise activities which includes head counts, monitoring of visitation, meal service, tray and utensil collection, medication distribution, unclothed search, and mail allocation. Tasks rotate through areas that include Housing Units, Tower (yard time) and Control. Worker must be able to perform the essential functions of the position in each work area.
In addition, all special needs prisoners are monitored and attended to by a correction officer. As necessary, all correction officers are required to administer first aid or react to emergency situation that could exceed a Medium strength rating as defined by the United States Department of Labor.
Essential Functions of the Job:
1. Conducts searches on incoming inmates and prepares the individuals for incarceration. Task is performed 24/7, including work release and weekend only inmates. More than 800 inmates are processed annually.
2. Regularly conducts rounds and ensures to presence of inmates and safety of environment. Maintains head count.
3. Documents and maintains daily log of prison activity.
4. Consistently observes inmates with respect to behavior, dress, contraband, or other illegal items.
5. Supervises and assists with the serving of meals, as well as distribution of medication to inmates.
6. Consistently interfaces with inmates to identify needs and/or problem.
7. Oversees family visits at the prison.
8. Strip search inmates who have had outside contact.
9. Visually observe all housing units for wellness and security checks.
10. Accompany prisoners for appointments such as legal, haircuts, religious services and support groups.
11. Conduct perimeter checks per shift.
12. Monitor year time as assigned.
13. Oversee compliance of work release inmates.
14. As necessary, use appropriate physical force, including accurate discharge of a shotgun and Glock 17 handgun, to maintain safety of the inmates and staff.
Supplemental Tasks:
1. Distribute medication, as necessary.
2. Assists with meal distribution, as necessary.
3. Observes and counts all plastic utensils, trays, etc. during meal times.
4. Observes and validates linen and prisoner uniform exchanges two items per week.
5. Stack trays post-meal time.
6. Distribute mail.
7. Accompany prisoner to shower, as necessary.
8. Supervise cleaning tasks of inmates.
9. Observes, maintains and disseminates information from control room.
10. Attends training, as assigned, to maintain knowledge of best practices and procedures.
11. Maintains firearm(s) certification(s).

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING
High School Diploma/GED Required.
General Educational Levels:
· Reasoning 3
· Mathematical 2

Vocational Criteria:
· Basic computer/Keyboarding skills required
· Pre-Employment physical exam and drug & alcohol screen
· Criminal history clearance
· Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
· Successful completion of Department of Corrections (DOC) basic training after 24 months
· Experience with first aid and/or CPR preferred
· Annual Fit for Duty Examination
Standard Vocational Preparation Level (SVP):
· 4 (Over 3 months and up to 6 months)

Strength:

Each shift is staffed with from three (3) to seven (7) Corrections Officers (CO) and a Shift Commander. In addition to the tasks set forth above, the Shift Commander is responsible for providing occasional to frequent instruction to officers and for briefing incoming shift CO’s and/or Shift Commander.
