Program Recreation Assistant – Special Olympics (part-time)

Greenville County Rec is seeking a friendly, caring, and dedicated professional to assist the Special Olympics Area Director/Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in the delivery of Special Olympics on-site programming, specifically Fall/Spring sports practice seasons. This position offers exceptionally meaningful work and a great team of coworkers, Special Olympics athletes and volunteers.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Essential Tasks include:
Attends all Special Olympics sports practices. Monitors and supervises evening and weekend Special Olympics sports program operations, ensuring compliance with the County of Greenville and Greenville Rec policies, procedures, and standards of safety. Serves as on-site contact and checks in all athletes and volunteers. Requires programming on multiple evenings and weekends. Maintains records pertinent to Special Olympics sports seasons. Submits required records/paperwork to Area Director on regular basis. Serves as liaison between onsite Special Olympics sports program attendees/volunteers and Area Director. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment. Loads and transports necessary equipment for sports practices. Opens, closes and secures facility at appropriate times. Drives 14-passenger minibus/van and safely transports participants as needed. Takes appropriate steps to ensure the safety of all athletes and volunteers as well as the protection of County property. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Prefer a Bachelor’s degree (or applicant in pursuit of Bachelor/Master’s degree) in Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
- One year relevant experience as well as experience working with individuals with special needs.
- Possess a valid state driver’s license
- Possess or obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification (this may be obtained post-hire).
- Well-developed communications, interpersonal, organizational skills.
