This is an investigative arm of Law Enforcement. Work includes responding to serious crimes, felonies, and others to include but not limited to, crimes against property such as burglary and theft, crimes against a person such as robbery, assault. Work may also include specialized crime, such as sexual assualt, child abuse, drugs crimes, and financial crimes. Work requires strength in public relations by establishing a rapport with the public by maintaining a high standard of professionalism. Work is performed under general supervision. Detectives shall coordinate with patrol sergeants at major crime scenes. Detectives will be in charge of the scene and shall request personnel assistance through the sergeant. Sergeants are not in charge of detectives but are in charge of providing personnel resources as needed and requested. Detectives are in charge of the crime scene. The detective shall carry an investigative workload as with other detectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complex evidence handling.
  • Issues warnings, makes arrests, gathers evidence, testifies in court, enforces laws, rules, and regulations and assists in the prosecution of offenders.
  • Prepare evidence for court usage during criminal trials.
  • Providing for evidentiary processing, collection and preservation for all evidence related information.
  • Investigates criminal violations, conducts follow up investigations neccessary to apprehend te responsible individuals. Observes indcidents of law violations, and problems in order to enfroce the law and protect the public.
  • Determining necessary interviews of victims, suspects, witnesses and the priority in conducting interviews.
  • Writes detailed reports of incidents in order to provide statistical information, assist prosecutors in preparing criminal cases, and provide a historical record.
  • Investigates serious bodily injury or fatal accidents that could involve criminal prosecution.
  • Operate a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions after completion of the Emergency Vehicle Operating course.
  • Foster positive working relationships with other Law Enforcement agencies.
  • Maintains care, custody and control of the evidence room.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Maine Criminal Justice Academy graduate or equivalent
  • Preferred - Specialized crime-scene training

Hours: Full-Time, Non-exempt (Hourly) Pay Scale; $30.03 – $36.94
