Home Delivered Meals Worker (Hourly) - BC-02

Picks up meals from vendors; packs meals; delivers noon meals to homebound elderly clients; keeps records of meal deliveries, projects income, and vehicle maintenance; and performs other duties as required.


There is no examination for this recruitment.  Persons who qualify will be placed on the eligible list in accordance with their availability to work in the various geographical districts on the island of Hawai'i.  

There is one (1) immediate permanent part-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Elderly Activities Division in Kailua-Kona.

The registration list will be used for Home Delivered Meals Worker permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointments may lead to conversion to permanent appointments.

Positions are part-time (15 to 19 hours a week and paid by the hour) for the Hawai'i County Nutrition Program with the Elderly Activities Division.  Drives a minivan, Ford F150 pick up truck with refrigeration unit, and a 15 passenger van (all vehicles are automatic).

If selected, a criminal background check will be conducted.

• Picks up meals from vendors and ice for cold foods.
• Packs meals into containers.
• Delivers noon meals to homebound elderly clients Monday through Friday.
• Verifies route sheets daily for new clients and for meal count.
• Loads containers into vehicles.
• Keeps records of deliveries.
• Refers any client irregularities to supervisor for follow up.
• Cleans up kitchen packing area.
• Returns pans to vendors.
• Delivers and picks up inter-office mail.
• Tallies and records daily project income, prepares deposit slip, and deposits income.
• Does daily maintenance check of vehicle, reports any problems.
• Keeps vehicle clean.
• Responds to emergencies involving clients.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Training and Experience: 
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

• graduation from high school, and 
• possession of a valid State of Hawai‘i driver's license (Class 3) or any other comparable driver’s license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire), and
• candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance by the district court. (You will be required to submit your current traffic abstract at time of interview.)

Notes: 

• Prior to completion of probation, must possess a current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
• In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai'i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency.  If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person at their own expense at that phase of the selection process.

Ability to:  perform manual labor; work well with the elderly; prepare simple reports; read street maps; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
