The County of Humboldt Department of Aviation has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team! As a Department of Aviation employee, you will work in an environment with other motivated individuals who are passionate about their work.
What You'll Do:- Maintain the airfield and report/correct problems to ensure safe operation of the airport.
- Assist aircraft operators and work with and respond to tenants, contractors, and various public and private agencies.
- Accept fuel deliveries and monitors fuel quality and inventory.
- Conduct routine safety and security checks of airport grounds, facilities, and buildings.
- Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment including trucks, power and hand tools.
- Provide emergency response, including aircraft rescue and fire fighting.
This position will be located in McKinleyville, California at the California Redwood Coast Humboldt County Airport (ACV). The County also manages five other airports throughout the County and employees will regularly use a county vehicle to travel to these airports to perform similar work. Current schedules include 10-hour day or night shifts and includes working on holidays and weekends. Schedules my change dependent upon the needs of the organization. There are several additional pay incentives for this classification including: an annual uniform allowance, on-call incentive pay, and shift differential incentive pay.
Supplemental Information:
- Qualified candidates must be available to work shifts between 3:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight, seven days a week, including holidays.
- Prior to appointment, successful candidates will be required to pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 10-year criminal history background investigation.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs routine and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of airport facilities, runways and equipment; maintains airport safety and security and provides emergency services as necessary; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Airport Service Worker I is the entry level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in aviation services and airport operations. This class is alternately staffed with Airport Service Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.
Airport Service Worker II is the skilled working level class in this series. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties with minimal supervision. While this class contains some work elements found in maintenance classes, it is distinguished from these classes in that these duties relate specifically to aviation services and airport operations. This class is distinguished from Airport Operations Supervisor in that the latter has day-to-day supervisory responsibility for aviation services and airport operations.
- Conducts routine safety and security checks of airport grounds, facilities and buildings; reports and/or corrects problems to ensure safe operation of the airport; maintains and ensures clearance of restricted areas.
- Checks and secures airport terminal and other buildings at the end of the work day; periodically checks for trespassers, vandals and other unauthorized persons and vehicles; notifies proper authorities as necessary.
- Assists aircraft operators in parking and tie down activities; services aircraft by adding fuel and engine oil and washing windshields; collects and records fuel and parking fees.
- Accepts fuel deliveries and fills fuel truck; monitors fuel quality and inventory; checks fueling equipment.
- Provides emergency services by operating fire fighting equipment and extinguishing aircraft fires; administers first aid; attends aircraft fire fighting and first aid training classes.
- Maintains the airfield by changing and repairing runway and taxiway lights, sweeping runways and taxiways and resetting breakers.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs on airport buildings, facilities, equipment and vehicles; operates and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, forklifts, pumps and power and hand tools.
- Maintains records and maintains various files related to the work performed; uses a radio to receive and dispatch information.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
