DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a trainee class in the engineering technical support series. Some long-term positions in this class may be alternately staffed with Engineering Technician I and II, and incumbents may advance to those higher levels after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the requirements of the higher level classes. Others may serve as part-time or relief positions.
  • Learns to operate computer-aided drafting equipment; draws layouts and details; prepares maps, charts and graphic work.
  • Assists staff in copying, binding, collating and record keeping.
  • Organizes and maintains records and files; maintains map files.
  • Performs engineering-related computer entry work.
  • Gathers data and assists in traffic studies.
  • May assist on survey crews.
  • Picks up, delivers and stores office and technical supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares basic records and reports of work performed.
  • Learns to operate technical engineering office and field equipment.
  • Assists higher-level engineering staff on project work as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, techniques and equipment used in drafting, surveying and related work.
  • Basic data entry operation.
  • Mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry.
  • Office support methods, including the operation of standard office equipment.
Skill in:
  • Performing drafting and graphic work, including preparing neat, precise and accurate drawings and plans.
  • Learning the principles and practices of equipment used in technical engineering support work.
  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Learning to read and interpret engineering drawings and maps.
  • Preparing accurate and concise records and reports.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
Specified positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license.

Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is: Completion of high school or technical school coursework in mechanical drawing, algebra and trigonometry.

LICENSES

Some classifications require possession of valid professional and/or technical licenses. Some classifications may require the possession of a valid California driver’s license.

 

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
