We are seeking a motivated individual to fill the full-time Animal Control Officer role for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

The successful candidate is responsible for enforcing relevant statutes and ordinances concerning animal ownership, licensing, investigation of complaints, and the prevention of animal cruelty. The successful candidate will engage in activities such as capturing and impounding unlicensed, stray, and uncontrolled animals, investigating reports of neglect and cruelty, and potentially performing door-to-door inspections for animal licensing. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is a requirement.

Candidates will be subjected to an extensive background investigation covering personal, employment, and criminal history, along with drug testing, to ensure their suitability for the role based on character and work ethic.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • High school graduate or equivalent required.
    • Possession of a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of safe and humane methods for handling, restraining, and transporting animals.
    • Familiarity with Kent County's geographic layout, including municipal and township boundaries, as well as its road network.
    • Understanding of state statutes and county ordinances related to animal control.
    • Ability to positively engage with the public and animal owners from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • Prior experience in animal control, animal care, or law enforcement is preferred.
  • Required Specialized Training and Certifications:
    • Ability to learn and become proficient in defensive tactics to ensure personal and public safety.
    • Ability to learn and become proficient in de-escalation techniques to resolve confrontations.
    • Successfully complete the provided training in the safe operation and certification for the use of Tasers and OC spray.
    • Successfully complete the provided training and certification for access to the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN).
    • Demonstrate proficiency in accurate report writing and investigative techniques such as leveraging technology and databases for thorough investigations.

No charge for WellVision Exam; $20 materials co-pay or up to $60 co-pay for contact fitting with participating doctors

$50,000 County paid Term Life Insurance

Self-pay in increments of $5,000; Minimum-$15,000/Maximum-$450,000
Spouse term life = $25,000, Child term life = $10,000

Vacation Leave
6 hours 40 minutes each month – after initial month of hire (0-3 years)

67% of gross wages; 26 week benefit

Long-Term Disability

Paid Time Off
Pro-rated amount of 80 hours based on number remaining months in the year at time of hire.
80 hours on the payroll at start of the year.
May accumulate up to 120 hours
Unused paid time off in excess of 120 hours will be added to the employee's reserve sick leave bank up to 182 hours. Hours in excess of 182 will be placed in employee’s retirement bonus bank.

Paid Parental Leave
80 hours of paid time off for birth of a child or temporary placement of the child for adoption. Eligible the 1st of the month following date of hire, runs concurrently with FMLA

Probation Period
First 6 months of employment

Shift Differential
$1.00 per hour for regularly scheduled shifts beginning at 2:00 PM or later

Weekend Differential
$1.00 per hour for regularly scheduled shifts beginning at 11:00 PM Friday and ending at 7:00 AM Monday

Overtime
1 1/2 times regular straight-time rate for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week

Merit Increases

Tuition Reimbursement
$365 per credit hour; maximum of 9 credit hours per year (see policy for eligibility)

Deferred Compensation
Enrollment first of each month with a minimum investment of $25 per pay period

Retirement/Defined Pension
Mandatory participation in a Contributory Defined Benefit Pension Plan.
Employee contribution is 9.21% of pre-tax earnings

Employees who retire under the Kent County Retirement Plan (other than a deferred retirement) will receive pension service credit for all hours in their Retirement Bonus Bank at the time of retirement.

Supplement to Medical Benefits Premium
