Essential Job Functions

AN ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions :

  • Conducts engineering geology investigations by acting as project manager, technical lead, technical peer reviewer; determining needs and requirements pertaining to the investigation (e.g., scope of work, design of an exploration program, selection of suitable exploratory techniques); reviewing and interpreting geologic and environmental materials.
  • Provides construction services by preparing and reviewing memos (e.g., Preliminary Environmental Site Screening Memo) for all construction projects; reviewing design plans and specifications and conducting in-construction inspections for a variety of construction projects.
  • Ensures the technical integrity of developments (e.g., single family, multifamily, commercial, subdivision) by reviewing engineering reports (e.g., engineering geology and geotechnical); reviewing grading and / or building plans and ensuring the integration of consultant's recommendations; conducting site visits and making assessments of site conditions.
  • Supervises Engineering Geology Assistant series by assigning work; monitoring and reviewing work performance and productivity; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring adherence to timelines, schedules; motivating, training, coaching, and mentoring staff; conducting staff meetings.
  • Prepares and reviews reports (e.g., engineering geology, geotechnical, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment) by gathering and organizing information obtained from various sources (e.g., maps, database, aerial photographs, literature, field investigations); compiling data (e.g., findings); performing calculations.
  • Interacts with variety of individuals (e.g., subordinate staff, peers, management, public) by communicating information verbally (e.g., in-person, phone, communication platform (e.g., Teams); and / or in writing (e.g., email, smartphone); participating on technical committees (e.g., MIDAS, RCODS, GIFT) and safety committees (e.g., confined space, excavation safety); participating in project meetings, discussions, and other communications.
  • Employs safe work practices by wearing protective equipment (e.g. safety footwear, safety vest, hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, protective clothing and / or gloves, sun protection, kneepads, respirator); attending Division Quarterly Safety Meetings; reading safety handouts, safety data sheets (SDS), policies, memos, etc.; staying up to date on industry's best practices.
  • Assists division management by participating in hiring and promotion processes and making recommendations on policies and procedures in order to enhance overall operational efficiency.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

California State Certificate of Registration as an Engineering Geologist

LICENSE :

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

SPECIAL INFORMATION :

  • A valid State of California Registration as a Professional Geologist (PG) holding the certification in Engineering Geology (EG) will also be accepted.
  • PHYSICAL CLASS : Physical Class III - Moderate : This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Benefit Information : Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a "new member" of the County's defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) - unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. Professional / Technical Knowledge of engineering geology principles and practices - Working knowledge of engineering geology principles to perform investigations for geotechnical and environmental projects. Ability to interpret geologic materials (e.g., maps, aerial photographs, reports, data) and apply exploratory techniques.

    2. Professional / Technical Knowledge of equipment and software - Working knowledge of equipment (e.g., Brunton compass, rock hammer; sampling equipment, data logger) and software (e.g., Bluebeam Revu, RocScience, Microsoft Office Suite) for the use in geotechnical and environmental investigations.

    3. Professional / Technical Knowledge of Safety Practices and Procedures - Able to apply knowledge of rules, policies, and procedures (e.g. California Occupational Safety Health Administration - Cal OSHA). Applies knowledge of safety practices and procedures in the workplace (e.g. wearing proper safety gear, handling of tool / equipment). Shows vigilance and identifies potentially unsafe conditions in the workplace to perform duties without posing a threat to the health and safety of one's self or others. Operates equipment and vehicles properly.
