DEFINITION:
Supervises and participates in the work of a small professional staff engaged in the production of creative and quality graphic design and manual artwork for a County department, or assists in directing a larger staff providing such services to a variety of departments.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class report to a higher-level supervisor and are responsible for providing administrative and technical supervision over the work of a small graphic arts staff or assists in directing a larger group of staff providing graphic arts services to a variety of County departments. Head Graphic Artist positions utilize an extensive knowledge of composition and production techniques and methods and of the styles and media used in the development and creation of various graphic arts work.
- Plans, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of a small graphic arts staff.
- Approves or determines the themes, ideas, and methods to be used in producing graphic and pictorial presentations of instructional or informative material.
- Supervises and participates in the design and preparation of reports, two and three dimensional exhibits, illustrations, displays, pamphlets, and other visual aids.
- Selects and coordinates the services of vendors such as typographers and printers; and may contract vendor for services.
- Confers with departmental staff members to obtain information and sell graphic presentations.
- Approves all departmental graphic art displays.
- Conducts research on new materials, methods, and production techniques of new equipment.
- Reviews artwork produced by subordinates to insure that the design and printing process conform to the required level of quality.
- Prepares budget and production costs estimates.
- Assists in the supervision and review of the work of photographers, calligraphers, and graphic artists.
- Assists in coordinating and consulting with the staff of user departments supplying and requesting material to be graphically designed and produced.
- Designs and coordinates the production of large indoor and outdoor exhibits, floats and displays; designs and creates pamphlets, posters, and other informational and educational publications requiring personal interpretation, editing, and research of subject matter.
Four (4) years' commercial art* work experience in the design and production of graphic presentations, publications, exhibits, and displays.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II – Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
You must POSSESS and CLEARLY EXPRESS detailed years of experience performing relevant duties, related to the requirements within your online job application under the "Experience" area.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Credit will be given to applicants that possess the following desirable qualifications:
- Experience beyond the Minimum Requirements.
- Work experience with graphics programs in the Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
Once we have determined that you meet our experience requirements described above, our examination process will consist of an evaluation of experience based on application information, desirable qualification, and supplemental questionnaire at the time of filing weighted 100%.
Applicants must meet the requirements described above at the time of filing and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added to the Eligible Register.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the
Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
