A Senior Building Engineering Inspector is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: inspects all types of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with the County's Building Laws and related federal, State, and local codes and zoning ordinances; Reviews plans for building construction, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical details prior to performing inspections; Approves changes to private construction site work in structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and related work consistent with code and ordinance requirements; Initiates soil tests where evidence indicates soil instability; Performs relocation, occupancy, business license and major grading inspections; Assists subordinate inspection personnel in performing the more complex inspections related to unusual occupancy buildings and rehabilitation projects; Assists in the training and orientation of subordinate inspection personnel; Prepares reports and maintains records related to issuing permits; Files complaints against willful violators of the County's Building Laws and testifies in court, as needed; and drives a motor vehicle to get to various inspection sites on a routine basis.
Two (2) years of experience performing field inspections to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances related to building construction at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Building Engineering Inspector.*
LICENSE
- A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
- The four (4) valid certifications consisting of Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Electrical Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspector, and Commercial Plumbing Inspector from recognized code certification organizations in a code used by the County of Los Angeles.**
In accordance with the provisions of California Health and Safety Code Section 18949, which requires the valid certification of building inspectors and certain other titles, persons appointed to such titles prior to January 1, 1994, who have remained in continuous County employment on such titles, shall be exempt from the certification provisions of the California Health and Safety Code Section 18949.
License Information: Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
PHYSICAL CLASSPhysical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*Experience at the level of the County of Los Angeles class of Building Engineering Inspector is defined as: performs field inspections to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances related to basic building construction and property rehabilitation. Inspects site grading, building, plumbing, and electrical and mechanical construction and installations on single-family dwellings and minor commercial and industrial buildings to ensure conformity with code requirements and zoning ordinances.

Applicants must meet the requirements and achieve 70% or higher on the combined score of Parts I and II in order to be placed on the eligible list.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
