What are the responsibilities and job description for the SENIOR VETERINARIAN position at County of Los Angeles?
Under the technical and administrative direction of a Chief Veterinarian assists in the planning, assigning, supervising and evaluating of the Veterinary Public Health Program and serves as a consultant to County and private veterinarians, allied health personnel and the public on the pathology of diseases of animals and on the comparative pathology of the diseases of animals which are identical or closely similar to those in man.
- Has charge of the activities of veterinarians and animal sanitation inspection staff assigned to the Veterinary Public Health Program by planning, assigning and reviewing work and evaluating performance.
- Resolves the more difficult problems occurring in the investigation of animal bites or disease by interpreting and clarifying public health laws, regulations, programs, policies and procedures and by advising subordinates of different methods to employ or by taking over the investigation of problem cases.
- Acts in the absence of the Chief Veterinarian.
- Provides technical consultation and advice in veterinary medical specialty to envision veterinarians, other County departments, other agencies and institutions, and to the public.
- Maintains a liaison with the City of Los Angeles Zoo regarding animal bites at the zoo and the quarantine of zoo animals; directs and performs field investigations of reported zoonoses and other animal diseases.
- Trains or assists in the training of staff and affiliated personnel in procedures and methods related to area of specialty in veterinary medicine.
- Conducts and participates in research programs on animal diseases in Los Angeles County.
- Has overall charge of the medical programs conducted at the Animal Care Centers/Shelters; establishes policies and procedures relating to the operation of the spay/neuter clinics and the diagnosis, treatment and care provided to animals in the care of the department.
- Directs the maintenance of records on animals handled by the department.
- Administers anesthesia and medications and performs surgeries as necessary.
- Prepares records and reports.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:
Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
- Additional experience in veterinary public health work beyond the Specialty Requirements.
