SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

- Performs a wide variety of paraprofessional technical office and field engineering support work.
- Reviews, designs, drafts, and inspects capital improvement, maintenance, and development projects.
- Prepares drawings, plans, permits, and preliminary reports for construction and improvement projects; prepares cost estimates and specifications; prepares or reviews engineering designs and plans as assigned.
- Performs construction inspections to ensure compliance with applicable plans, specifications, and standards; conducts field inspections to investigate concerns and reports information to engineering management staff.
- Maintains engineering files, including computer databases, plans, studies, inspections, surveys, maps, and other data related to engineering and transportation projects.
- Prepares, updates, reproduces, and distributes maps, drawings, blueprints, and other information recorded in the Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
- Participates as a member of a survey crew conducting preliminary, location, construction, property, topographic, and other precise surveys; performs calculations, construction staking, and survey instrument work; reviews survey maps for accuracy prior to their being officially recorded.
- Interprets, prepares, and checks legal property descriptions; researches grant deeds and easements; plots County rights-of-way.
- Performs field, office, and computer-aided studies and prepares periodic and special reports based on findings from research, studies, and surveys, and makes recommendations on findings.
- Provides information to the public, contractors, engineers, developers, and representatives of other government agencies.
- Utilizes a wide variety of engineering testing, drafting, and survey tools and equipment; calibrates, maintains, and performs basic repairs to utilized tools and equipment.
- Makes a variety of engineering and mathematical computations and calculations.
- Prepares for and represents the Department at meetings, as delegated.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework in engineering, drafting, mathematics, or a related field.
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible office engineering support work equivalent to the County’s Engineering Aide.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of appointment, an appropriate California driver license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
When assigned to an office environment:
- Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various County and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 10 pounds.
When assigned to a field environment:
- Must possess mobility to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; to reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, and grasp; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confining spaces and around machines; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 20 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment and assistance from other staff.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees predominately work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may work in the field and occasionally be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous chemical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with members of the public or with staff under emotionally stressful conditions while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Placement on Eligible List:
The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final score on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight. The names of two or more eligibles having final ratings which are identical shall be grouped on the eligible list as tie names with equal rank for certification and appointment purposes. Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of six (6) months or one (1) year, unless otherwise determined by the Director pursuant to section 6-4 (b) and may be extended for up to an additional year by the Commission.
