The Madera County Sheriff's Office has career opportunities for Sheriff's Cadet II-Extra Help.  The successful candidate(s) selected by the Madera County Sheriff's Office to join our team will attend a police academy as a County-sponsored attendee, and may have the opportunity to promote to a Deputy Sheriff I with Madera County after academy graduation.



Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine and progressively responsible non-sworn tasks within a training program framework to prepare for a career in law enforcement; rotates through various divisions of the Sheriff’s Office and performs related work as required.


  • Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist deputies with non-emergency duties; complete routine police reports; conduct non-hazardous investigations; collect evidence at crime scenes; appear in court as a witness.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries from citizens; give general assistance and directions as appropriate.
  • Complete routine police forms for prisoner booking and processing.
  • Collect and compile statistical data; research crime trends for publication to deputies and the public.
  • Fingerprint and photograph prospective employees, the public and drug or sex registrants.
  • Operate office machines and equipment such as computers, radios, and vehicles.
  • Answer incoming calls for service; input information about an incident into the computer for dispatching of appropriate emergency units.
  • May assist in a non-emergency capacity, direct and control traffic; provide parking and facility access control.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Basic functions of law enforcement agencies.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Principles and procedures of effective record keeping.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Techniques used to provide a high level of customer service with those contacted in the scope of employment.
Skill to:
  • Operate office equipment skillfully.
  • Abide by all established Sheriff’s Department safety protocols.  
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely.  
Ability to:
  • Learn the practices, policies, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with the general public, and assisting and cooperating agencies.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Be enrolled in an accredited POST-certified Basic Academy that will qualify an individual to serve as a Peace Officer pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.1 upon graduation.  Enrollment in the POST-certified Basic Academy shall satisfy the educational requirements referenced in the Sheriff’s Cadet I qualifications. 

Experience:

Possession of some experience (either paid work experience or volunteer experience) in a law enforcement agency is desirable.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must maintain POST and department physical fitness and weight requirements necessary to perform the job functions with or without accommodation, such as the ability to walk, run, operate motor vehicles and equipment, and physically detain and appre­hend suspects. The employee must be able to lift, carry, or drag up to 100 pounds and occasionally up to 165 pounds.

Specific vision required for this job include 20/70 uncorrected, correctable to 20/30 and normal color vision. Hearing must be within normal range.

Psychological Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work; work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work with frequent interruptions; work under intensive deadlines; and interact with County managers, staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees work primarily under typical office conditions and as needed in an outdoor environment with exposure to noise and outside weather conditions, biological hazards, and disease/infestations. Work involves potentially dangerous situations and exposure to disturbing or traumatic events. Work involves situations that may require the supervision or control of persons who may become physically violent or combative. 

The employee may be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site and to adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work extended hours.

EXAMINATION/SELECTION PROCESS:

Extra Help appointments are not governed by the Madera County Civil Service process. All applications and supplemental questions received for this recruitment will be forwarded to the appropriate Sheriff's Office personnel for administration of the following:
  • Physical Agility Test
  • POST (PELLET-B) Examination
  • Oral Examination
  • Personnel History Statement Review
  • Command Interview
Candidates selected for further consideration will go through a thorough background investigation, and may be provided with a conditional job offer, pending a psychological assessment and medical evaluation (including a drug screen). The Sheriff's Office will sponsor and assist the selected individual(s) in enrollment in the Police Academy.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment with the County of Madera, a candidate must submit to a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, and related follow up testing as necessary. Designated classifications* are also subject to a medical examination, which includes a review of medical history. TB screenings and medical exams are administered by the Madera County Public Health Department and/or health care professional designated by the County.

Designated classifications required to submit to an employment medical examination generally include those that are physical in nature or as may be required by law.
