ABOUT THE POSITION
As an Installer within the Telecommunications Division of the Department of Public Works, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic communications equipment in County public safety vehicles. This vital role involves ensuring the quality installation, configuration, and programming of critical public safety equipment, including radios, data terminals and other related vehicular equipment. You will contribute directly to the effectiveness of our public safety personnel by maintaining reliable communication systems. This is a full-time position (75 bi-weekly hours) within the Telecommunications Division.

Your background in electronics has prepared you well for this role. You possess a solid understanding of fundamental principles, including Ohm's Law, AC/DC theory, audio and radio frequency circuits, electronic measurements, semiconductor principles, and low voltage cabling. You're comfortable working independently, making sound decisions within established guidelines, and you're proficient in the safe operation of hand and power tools.
You also understand the demands of public service and are willing to be flexible with your schedule. You recognize that this role may require you to work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call availability for emergencies. QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Of
- Installation and repair principles of radio equipment, light bars, and wiring.
- Basic electronic theory, including Ohms Law, AC/DC theory, audio and radio frequency circuits, electronic measurements, semiconductor fundamentals, and mathematics for electronic technology.
- Auto electrical systems and basic auto body work.
- Rules and regulations of Federal Communications Commission to include general terminology and telecommunications systems.
- General rules and regulations of OSHA and CALOSHA.
Ability To
- Read and interpret simple electronic drawings and diagrams.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools to install equipment and to manipulate small tools and delicate equipment with dexterity.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Perform mathematical calculations to compute frequency and power requirements.
- Install communications and electronic equipment in a variety of vehicles.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, coworkers, and the public.
- Complete tasks in a timely manner to maximize cost efficiency.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Apply principles of electronics, logic, and scientific reasoning to develop and review alternate courses of action to solve equipment failures.
- Utilize knowledge of theory and practical application of mobile, conventional, and trunked radio systems, basic wiring, electrical sources, and computer hardware and operating systems.
- Exercise sound judgment within established policies, rules, and guidelines when dealing with emergency medical services, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and all public safety end users.
- Establish and maintain a proactive approach to customer relations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in electronics or a related field or one year of full-time experience in the installation and repair of communications equipment that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses
This job class requires travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver’s license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. If a driver’s license is required, at the time of the selection interview by the appointing authority, applicants will have to furnish a recent DMV driving record.
A Federal Communications Commission radio telephone operators license is desirable.
