Department of Human Concerns - Temporary Full-Time 

As an advanced trainee, receives increasingly complex cases while continuing to advance toward becoming independent workers; engages in community outreach and resource database development and maintenance ; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
Aging and Disability Services Specialist II positions are typical of two general types:
  • Engages in direct service of more complex cases that may require ongoing intervention and assistance 
  • Responsible for  journalistic, public relations work, and informational materials for the Division. Maintains the accuracy and relevancy of web-based resource database that is accessible to the public.

  • serves in cases that may include those with a variety of psychosocial, physical/mental , and environmental areas of concern and may involve family systems in which discord exists;
  • works with interdisciplinary team members to ensure effective case coordination;
  • utilizes established policies and procedures , casework skills and judgment to address more routine aspects of casework ;
  • engages in health fairs, and various other public events to increase public knowledge of the ADRC and all available services;
  • provides information to members of the general public regarding aging and disability issues and available community services and resources;
  • engages in community and outreach and resource database development and maintenance to ensure that information regarding community resources remains accurate, current and relevant;
  • maintains the database that is accessible to the public via a comprehensive website and is user-friendly to persons with disabilities;
  • assists in organizing appropriate committee meetings, community public relations and educational events and distributing ADRC promotional materials;
  • ensures that information is stored on the database according to appropriate guidelines;
  • engages in informational health fairs and various other public events to increase knowledge of the ADRC and all available services;
  • provides information to members of the general public regarding aging and disability issues and available community services and resources;
  • performs other duties as assigned.
Training and Experience:  A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree which included a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours in courses such as aging, disabilities, human services, psychology, social work, social welfare, sociology, counseling, criminal justice, or other behavioral sciences and one (1) year of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved case management and/or support planning in the area of social services, health or education.
 
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicles driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).
 
Knowledge of: the principles and practices of behavioral sciences, aging and disability; general research, evaluation, interviewing methods and techniques; report and letter writing; casework methods and techniques such as assessment and diagnosis used to evaluate and provide treatment for people who need services; the mission, goals, pertinent laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Office on Aging; and community resources available to consumer groups.
 
Ability to:  read, understand, interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the Office on Aging programs; collect, analyze, evaluate information; prepare written reports, correspondence, and other official documents; establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse populations and members of interdisciplinary teams.

Physical Effort Grouping:  LightTEMPORARY POSITIONS: Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions.
