Description

Performs skilled carpentry and cabinetmaking work in constructing, altering and repairing all types of wooden structures and articles including a wide variety of high grade wooden furniture; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics :

This class differs from classes in the Carpenter series in that the Carpenter-Cabinet Maker performs both skilled carpentry and cabinetmaking work in constructing, altering and repairing all types of wooden structures and articles including a wide variety of high grade wooden furniture; whereas classes in the Carpenter series are primarily involved in performing and / or supervising skilled rough and finished carpentry work in the construction, alteration and repair of all types of wooden structures and articles.

Examples of Duties

Lays out, cuts, fits and assembles concrete forms, framework, ceilings, floors, walls, partitions, stairways, windows, window frames, doors, interior and exterior trim; constructs and finishes desks, tables, chairs, drawers, book cases, counters and built-in cabinets; removes and replaces flooring, ceilings, partitions, roofs or other portions of wooden structures damaged or destroyed by termites, wet or dry rot or other causes; installs glass panes in doors and windows; installs and repairs hardware such as locks, door stops, hinges and door knobs; operates wood working hand tools and machinery such as hand and power saws, shaper, wood lathe, planer, router, jointer, sander, drill press, and power actuated tools and other tools common in carpentry and cabinet making work; read blueprints, sketches and specifications to determine material needed; may assign tasks to carpenters and cabinet makers and supervise the work of helpers; may operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience : (1) A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of apprenticeship training or four years of experience in carpentry work under a journey level carpenter and one year of experience in cabinetmaking or its equivalent.

License Requirement : Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).

Knowledge of : practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in carpentry and cabinetmaking; characteristics, uses and adaptability of various types of wood, wood substitutes, veneers, gluing and bonding agents and hardware; pertinent buildings codes; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to : plan, lay out and set-u p work; set up, adjust and operate a variety of woodworking tools and machines; read, interpret and work from plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches and working drawings; estimate labor and material requirements; rig and work from scaffolds and other high or difficult vantage points; construct and repair high grade wooden furniture and fine woodwork; work to close tolerances; work with dexterity and safety; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with others; handle weights and loads.
