Repairs and overhauls a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, loaders and power shovels as a substantially full-time assignment; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Classes in this series differ from classes in the Automotive Mechanic series in that the Construction Equipment Mechanic classes perform or supervise work connected with the repair and overhaul of construction equipment as a substantially full-time assignment; whereas the Automotive Mechanic classes perform or supervise work involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of automotive equipment and which may involve the repair and overhaul of construction equipment.
This class represents the journey-level performance of skilled work in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of a variety of construction equipment as a primary responsibility.
- Diagnoses motor knocks, noises and other mechanical failures on construction equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, loaders and power shovels;
- Disassembles engines; Inspects, removes, repairs and replaces such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, etc.;
- Repairs and overhauls major units such as brake systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axles, steering units, cooling systems, etc.;
- Repairs crawler tracks and drives, winches, bulldozer blades, scoops, power take-off, control mechanisms and chains; road tests equipment repaired;
- Performs minor welding in connection with repair work;
- May fabricate parts;
- Performs work involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of automotive equipment incidental to its primary assignment; may supervise others.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of apprenticeship training involving repair of construction equipment or four years of automotive repair experience under a journey level mechanic, one of which shall have involved construction equipment repair work.
License Requirement: Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Hawaii (equivalent to Hawaii Type 3) and, prior to the completion of probation, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (Either Class A with applicable endorsement(s) or Class B with applicable endorsement(s) as required by the specific position), a current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate, and a State of Hawaii DOT Safety Inspector Certification (as required by the specific position).
Knowledge of: theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; tools, machines, materials and practices used in the repair and overhaul of construction equipment and appurtenant mechanical, hydraulic and electrical units; operations of various types of construction equipment sufficient to conduct road tests; hazards and safety practices applicable to the trade.
Ability to: diagnose and adjust mechanical defects in diesel and gasoline engines; repair and overhaul a variety of construction equipment; interpret various manufacturers' manuals in performing work; use appropriate tools and testing equipment; work with dexterity and safety; perform heavy manual work and lifting; understand and follow written and oral instructions; operate motorized equipment.
