LOCATIONS: Wailuku and Makawao
Supervises and participates in the care, maintenance, and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures; oversees the use of facilities at a recreation center; and performs other duties as required.Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for the operation of a recreation center and supervises and participates in the performance of a variety of manual and semiskilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures therein.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. - Supervises and participates in the care and maintenance of lawns, hedges, trees and shrubbery.
- Supervises and participates in planting shrubbery and plants, sodding lawns, fertilizing, trimming, propagating, and pruning plants.
- Supervises and participates in the repair and maintenance of park facilities including buildings, comfort stations, shelters, fences, backstops, stonewalls, barbecue pits, bleachers, picnic tables and other recreation equipment and structures in the recreation center for such events as meetings, luaus, sport events, conventions, etc.
- Oversees the use of the recreation center by the using organization or general public.
- Receives, stores and issues supplies and materials.
- Supervises and participates in the loading, moving and storing of bleachers, platform facilities, chairs, tables, equipment, tools and other materials.
- Supervises and participates in janitorial tasks, assigns and participates in maintaining athletic fields and baseball diamonds in good condition for play; operates light motorized or power equipment and tools as required.
- Responsible for the safe and proper operation of power equipment.
- Responsible for the custody of all public address system and other portable equipment.
- Observes for and report violations of pertinent ordinances, laws, rules and regulations governing use of recreation center.
- Prepares reports of all activities, daily time sheets, and accidents.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: basic methods and tools used in the common buildings and construction trades; methods of preparing soils for planting; basic techniques of pruning, propagating, planting, cultivating and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees; operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
Ability to: assign and supervise the work of others; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; operate hand and power equipment and tools used in the repair and maintenance of park grounds and buildings; deal courteously and effectively with the general public, including the enforcement of ordinances, rules and regulations; make simple oral and written reports.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT:
Qualified applicants will be required to take an online assessment. Applicants are required to test alone in a quiet, distraction-free area using a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection, a microphone, a webcam (internal or external), and a Windows or Apple Operating System. Applicants who do not meet the system requirements will be provided an opportunity to take the online assessment on site.
TEMPORARY POSITIONS:
Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months.
