Serves in a trainee capacity, receiving on-and-off-the job training to learn the theories, techniques and methods used in lifeguarding; maintains pool and pool area; performs lifeguard duties under immediate supervision; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class represents the entry level class in the Pool Guard series. It involves formal and informal training in the basic principles, practices, methods and techniques of lifeguarding. Work assignments are made concurrently with orientation and training, and continued guidance and instructions are provided during such assignments.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. SKILLS ASSESSMENT:
Qualified applicants will be required to take an online assessment. Applicants are required to test alone in a quiet, distraction-free area using a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection, a microphone, a webcam (internal or external), and a Windows or Apple Operating System. Applicants who do not meet the system requirements will be provided an opportunity to take the online assessment on site.
Should you pass the online assessment, you will be required to complete a performance exam. To participate in the performance exam, you must sign a waiver verifying that you are physically and mentally fit to participate in the 300 meter swim.

- Attends training sessions and participates in informal discussions, on-the-job training, practice drills and demonstrations concerning lifeguarding and first aid procedures and techniques.
- Familiarizes self with departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Provides information and assistance to the general public.
- Maintains the pool and surrounding pool area.
- Under immediate supervision, performs limited lifeguarding duties.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).
Prior to completion of the probationary period, possession of a current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training or Lifeguarding Certificate; a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certificate or ARC Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certificate; a current ARC Water Safety Instructor Certificate; and completion of the Emergency Medical Responder course.
Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply lifeguarding and first aid methods and techniques; learn the operation and maintenance of the various pool equipment; act quickly and effectively in emergency situations; swim and learn water rescue techniques; read and understand rules and regulations; work effectively with others; deal tactfully and professionally with the public.
