Performs skilled work in the construction, repair and alterations of highway appurtenances and county baseyard facilities; performs a variety of welding tasks with oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for the performance of a variety of skilled work in the construction, repair and alteration of highway appurtenances and county baseyard facilities, including the performance of skilled welding tasks.
- Constructs, maintains, alters and repairs retaining walls, culvert headers, catch basins, gutters, storm drains, guard rails, sidewalks, curbings, spillways, loading platforms, floors, etc., using concrete blocks, stones, bricks, and soft mixes;
- Constructs and repairs stone work on bridges, walks, retaining walls and buildings;
- Constructs simple concrete and masonry bridge footings and wings;
- Plans, lays out and constructs or repairs timber bridges, decking and railings;
- Repairs, maintains and erects highway signs;
- Lays out, marks and welds light and heavy gauge metals in the repair of equipment frames, automotive bodies, grader blades, load buckets, water tanks, guard rails, etc.;
- Applies paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels by brush or spray to buildings, bridges, vehicles, machinery, etc.;
- May operate motorized equipment;
- Supervises laborers and helpers in maintenance and repair work;
- May perform other trade work.
Training and Experience: (1) Four years of experience involving carpentry and/or masonry work under a journey level carpenter and/or mason including or supplemented by some welding experience; or (2) any equivalent combination of training and experience.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3) and prior to completion of probation, a Hawaii State Commercial Driver's License (Class B) and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate.
Knowledge of: practices, tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance work; hazards and safety practices; steel welding and cutting equipment and its use.
Ability to: use common tools and techniques of the several trades such as masonry, carpentry, painting and steel work; read and interpret blueprints and sketches; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
