Position Summary
The Children’s Mental Health Social Worker helps children with a severe emotional disturbance deal with their disability in a way that allows them to live as independently as possible governed by Minnesota Rule 9520.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Position Duties
- Fulfill requirements of mental health act.
- Provide Case Management Services for Children in Out of Home Placement under Statute 260D.
- Coordination of mental illness commitment process.
- Assist clients in applying for government benefits.
- Complete functions necessary for proper administration of caseload.
- Participate in other social work responsibilities.
- Assist supervisor in assessing service needs and trends in service delivery to the mentally ill.

- Knowledge of and ability to adhere to social work methods, values, and principles.

- Knowledge of applicable software applications.
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of interviewing assessment, counseling, evaluation, and service coordination.
- Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships.

- Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written modes utilizing diplomacy and cultural sensitivity, with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
Required Training
- Minnesota Department of Human Service (DHS) 40-hour Children’s Mental Health New Worker Training.
- 30 hours of training every two years.
Required Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license with proof of insurance.
Relationships
- Regular interaction with County and Social Work program leaders.
- Regular interaction with prospective patient to identify needs and provide services, conduct assessments, monitor progress and resolve problems.
- Interaction with service providers for referrals, planning, service coordination, and assuring the needs, health and safety of individuals are met/assured.
- Interaction with medical, psychiatric, psychological, legal, educational, vocational, rehabilitation and other professionals and resources for referrals, information on services, and consultation.
Working Conditions
- Work is mainly performed in clients’ homes, service providers’ homes, detention, treatment and residential facilities, schools, jails, courts and other county offices.
- May require dealing with persons who may be disoriented, hostile, aggressive, abusive or threatening.
- There may be hours worked outside of the normal business hours.
- Exposure to unsafe, unsanitary environments and exposure to health risks.
Physical Requirements Of This Position
- Desk work involving use of a computer, telephone, and other devices.
- Communicate effectively with County staff, clients, and professional groups.
- Ability to read screens and documents.
- Ability to drive in various light and weather conditions.
- Ability to type and use a computer or mobile device.
- Office work may include reaching for documents, grasping documents, standing, walking, and repetitive motions.
- Lift and carry files and material weighing up to 25 pounds.
