Hiring Range: $20.00 – 25.00/hr. This is a non-exempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. The Operations, Strategy & Innovation (OSI) division of Child, Family, and Adult Services (CFAS) leads the pursuit of more efficient and effective services and helps CFAS achieve its strategic vision. We keep the wheels turning day to day, from budget and quality control to resource management and staff development. OSI helps the department decide where it’s heading and how to get there with data informed decision making.  We are an innovative and creative team striving towards improving services, identifying best practices, and promoting a positive work culture where staff feel valued and empowered, at every level, to drive meaningful change for each other and the community.

Position Summary
Provides interpreter and translation services for individuals seeking services or assistance from the County. This position, under minimal supervision, assists the public in completing required paperwork and forms and coordinates related services as requested or needed.

Essential Functions
• Interprets and translates initial requests, both on the phone and in person, for assistance, and provides communication for non-translating staff and the public.
• Schedules appointments, answers questions, and coordinates additional services or requests.
• Translates written materials and forms such as brochures, educational information, and directions and assists with forms completion when requested.
• Coordinates and performs a variety of administrative duties to support the department and staff.
• Accompanies staff on field visits which may include staff representing county departments in planning, administration, child protective services, medical providers, or workforce initiatives.
• Gathers materials for clients which will assist them in meeting their objectives or in obtaining assistance.
• Maintains information, data, or other materials on clients as necessary.
• Coordinates and performs a variety of administrative duties to support the department and staff.
• May be required to staff shelters in the event of a disaster.
• Mecklenburg County Health Department employees: Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal work locations, business hours and workdays may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, pandemics, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.



Minimum Qualifications
Experience:  
Minimum of two years of related experience and fluency in English and interpreting skills in Spanish.


Education:  
Associate's degree in a related field.

Licenses and Certifications
• Must be able to pass County’s certification exam
• Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
• Requires County Driving Privileges
• Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check


Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Knowledge of

• Structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
• Structure and content of the Spanish language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
• Knowledge of client/patient privacy and confidentiality practices

• Translating from Spanish to English and English to Spanish

• Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate
