POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs skilled activities that shall include operating and maintaining heavy equipment generally at the Foxhole Landfill.  Incumbent will operate such equipment as Roll Off Trucks, Backhoes, Skid Steers, and similar equipment.  Incumbent shall also complete routine equipment inspections, fueling and preventive maintenance requirements; This position will also require the knowledge of acceptable and non-acceptable waste types and familiarity with NC DEQ waste standards.

WHO WILL I BE WORKING WITH?
Incumbent will be working as part of a team with staff members in the Solid Waste Program at the Foxhole Landfill, as well as all other field-based staff in solid waste.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
This position is a mid-level position and will be part of a larger team of Maintenance and Operations workers.  The selected individual for this job will be primarily assigned to day-to-day equipment operation and maintenance of the Landfill, Residential Recycling Area and Yard Waste Areas.  Incumbents will be operating both large and small equipment, such as backhoes, skid steers, front end loaders, roll off trucks and other equipment.  Incumbent will have significant interaction with the general public who uses the landfill complex.  High level of team skills and customer skills are integral to the job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible for safe operation of motorized equipment including operating roll off truck on roadways.
Verbally communicates with coworkers and customers at the Facility providing direction on disposal issues.
Assures that work is performed in accordance with accepted trade practices and in a safe manner.
Prepares daily Pre/Post trip inspections, fills out Daily Equipment Check List.
Assists coworkers to ensure that the Facility is cleaned and organized
Communicates with supervisor/ staff regarding the maintenance needs and any problems identified.
Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines.
Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions.
Performs light maintenance, repairs, and fueling of equipment.
Assures that work is performed in accordance with accepted trade practices and in a safe manner with little waste of time and materials.
Prepares daily Pre/Post trip inspections, fills out daily fuel logs.
Communicates with supervisor/ staff regarding the maintenance needs and any problems identified or suggestions to enhance maintenance.
Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:  At least four (4) years of specialized maintenance experience directly related to the area of assignment.
Education:  High School Diploma or GED
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted? Yes
Licenses and Certifications:  North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a County Operator’s Permit. Class A or B CDL.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Incumbents should have experience working in the waste management field and be familiar with the nomenclature of terms, job hazards and standard limitations of material acceptance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge:
Lock out Tag out procedures
Hazmat Regulations regarding fuel transportation
Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to preventive maintenance
Safe work practices and hazards associated with work in an industrial job situations
Use of the tools, equipment, supplies, and methods used in the maintenance activities
Well versed in equipment maintenance issues, knowledge of where to find resources for various types of heavy equipment and knowledge of both new and older equipment types.

Skilled in:
Basic computer knowledge. MSWord, Excel, Outlook, Smart Phones, etc.
Ability to fill out daily forms in a paper format or electronic format for Fuel, and other required forms.
Operating and repairing Class 8 trucks, heavy equipment, and similar equipment.

Abilities: 
Technical/Professional Knowledge and Skills – Having achieved a satisfactory level of technical and professional skill or knowledge in position-related areas; keeping up with current developments and trends in area of expertise.
Managing Work – Effectively managing one’s time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently.
Communications – Ability to accurately describe maintenance and other work activities to supervisors and other staff verbally and through email as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Moderate noise is typical for the work environment for this job. Work may be outdoors and subject to inclement weather and the swings of temperature.  Work may be required on weekends and or holidays with advance notice.
